off road 1:17:07 [3] 8.0 mi (9:38 / mi)

CW North from the Dog, ideal crisp cold running conditions. Still finding hills 'challenging' and ran pretty hard on way back.

1 AM

off road 18:00 [2] 0.8 mi (22:30 / mi)

Good warm up
2 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 48:33 [5] 6.4 km (7:35 / km)

BAOC Urban race at Amesbury. A soulless set of estates possibly for nearby Boscombe Down airfield, but either an ideal place for urban and/ or good planning. Bitter day but no wind in the town and touchless emit allowed gloves. Tricky course with plenty of choices, Tried to go down alley with gate at 3 -same at 10, why bother putting on map? Big route choice 6-7 did choose a viable route but a long way round (sub-optimal) . Tiring quite badly towards end - could not see control at 21 (control blind), guy behind found it for me, but suddenly completely disorientated , followed guy whilst I sorted myself out, but slow and actually committed to poor route. Shame about the end but lack of stamina a bit of a reoccurring theme.

Tuesday Nov 28, 2017 #

off road 1:09:50 [3] 6.0 mi (11:38 / mi)

Social run with Ash on nice but cold morning out through top of Ashton Court and Abbotts pool and back through Leigh Woods. Quite a contrast to yesterday

Monday Nov 27, 2017 #

off road 1:35:34 [3] 8.0 mi (11:57 / mi)

Tinsel Trot -a long time since I have done a tough run. Today was cold with showers, as a precursor of what was to come the track through Rowberrow was flooded..... and both the top and the track across the bottom were very, very wet. Pushed quite hard and reached the top in 70.10 but tired on the way back. Quite pleased with the time in the conditions

Sunday Nov 26, 2017 #

orienteering (Urban) 58:53 [3] 6.0 km (9:49 / km)

Went for a walk this morning so just time for a late afternoon rather token gesture in the half light around Frenchay and Oldbury Court with a map

Saturday Nov 25, 2017 #

off road 52:54 [3] 5.0 mi (10:35 / mi)

Purdown, shorter route but still 3 hills. Cold, sharp day, feeling a bit better but still decided to limit running. Not strong on hills but that's what the training's about
2 AM

road run 10:00 [2] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Warm up
3 AM

orienteering race (Night) 1:03:03 [4] 5.0 km (12:37 / km)

Went to the WNL at Coopers Hill, a great place for Night O on a clear cold evening a bit on impulse to check out new light (very similar to old) and remember how difficult night O can be. Achieve both these aims but (absence of?) choice of controls poor and some navigation (absence of?) e,g, going to 13 was disappointing. So did not score many points and then not finding the finish contributed to me losing them! Did enjoy being out there

Friday Nov 24, 2017 #

off road 1:19:00 [3] 7.0 mi (11:17 / mi)

Social run with Pete and Jo from Swineford. Straight to Kelston Round Hill and back via golf course and Upton Cheyney

Thursday Nov 23, 2017 #

off road 1:09:15 [3] 6.0 mi (11:33 / mi)

Purdown, which has returned to its true greasy self. A bit slower, I do think I still have effects of bug, guts gradually returning to normal and no longer affecting running, and weak on hills. New trail shoes are no match for mudclaws on this stuff! Did have to "crack on" in last mile to get under 70 mins. A bit damp

Wednesday Nov 22, 2017 #

orienteering race 1:24:24 [4] 8.4 km (10:03 / km)

BAOC Event at Alice Holt, wood although green was much nicer than expected and it was definitely worth a visit. It was nice to visit a new (to me) area, and I liked the feel of being in a forest. Although there were plenty of paths the course kept you thinking, and there was plenty of choice I found it trickier on the ground than I expected and the vegetation was often not what I had envisaged. No 1 was close and I chose a path route (pre-race tactic) to 2, my head was not in the orienteering and I did not see the tracks, and really just bumbled in the right sort of direction. Some text obscuring the map ooadded to my confusion. (-3mins). Realising the forest was really not to bad ran straight for the next few and got much more into it. I did have trouble at 12, could not really understand the vegetation and searched in some unmarked dry ditches (-2mins), no 14 which I approached from a path junction to the south was further right. (-90secs). Feeling a bit weary towards the end, don't think I am yet quite recovered and time is quite slow, needed to be a bit more aggressive with forest running but was more of a feeble lamb today.

Warm up

Tuesday Nov 21, 2017 #

off road 1:02:33 [3] 5.5 mi (11:22 / mi)

Ashton court loop warn and dry but would stretch it to say sunny. Not well yet and still feeling weak and feeble and struggling with digestion but better than yesterday. Hoping to be more back to usual tomorrow

Monday Nov 20, 2017 #

orienteering (Urban) 50:14 [3] 6.0 km (8:22 / km)

Still not well and wet day so took map and pottered around Emerson Green streets. Very little energy and digestive system could be better....

Sunday Nov 19, 2017 #

off road 2:30:00 [2] 12.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

CW from KIng Billy to Ebley Mill with Dave and Celia, really run/walk. Probably LSD was the only session I could gave managed. Had taken ages to find slot in diaries so did not want to cancel. Not sure if it was a good idea
Nice autumn day, nice varied section, great views. Will go again sometime

Saturday Nov 18, 2017 #

Note

Sick as the proverbial parrot during Friday night, washed out and starved on Saturday. Grrr..... this was not in the plan, if you catch a bug its at the weekend and you are ok by Monday is a work habit

Friday Nov 17, 2017 #

off road 1:40:00 [3] 8.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Run with the chums in the Quantocks (Holford again), near perfect sunny, windless (so not cold), low temp winters day (some remnant frost), super views.

Thursday Nov 16, 2017 #

Note

Travel back from Sheffield, don't know if going to the swings with Evie really counts as training, However did push for a long time as swinging is clearly great fun, whether raining or not

Wednesday Nov 15, 2017 #

road run 1:05:00 [3] 7.0 mi (9:17 / mi)

Ran along the Derwent valley road with Laura and Evie. Still, sunny, day remarkable reflections in the lake, particularly of the larches. Took turns on pushing, suffice to say I have no plans to purchase a buggy to augment my training. Knee a bit sore at end -did not like tarmac?

Tuesday Nov 14, 2017 #

Note

Travel to Sheffield, did get out for late afternoon walk with Evie

Monday Nov 13, 2017 #

off road 1:10:27 [3] 6.8 mi (10:22 / mi)

Portbury run, started in loads of clothes but not that cold. Had to run quite hard, including the hills which were a bit of a struggle to do this time. Also helped as summer undergrowth has gone and not yet too wet. Not sure about knee, intend this week to be quite light

Sunday Nov 12, 2017 #

1 AM

off road 13:00 [2] 0.5 mi (25:59 / mi)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:27:25 [4] 8.6 km (10:10 / km)

Devon gallopen at Haytor - mixture of hail, rain and bright sunshine ,ran in loads of layers. Most was ok although a bit disappointed at how quickly Chris ran away towards the end but some was rubbish, missed no 2, don't know how as went passed the boulder (- 5mins) missed 8, ran hard up the hill passed long knoll into depression but no flag, went away and looked elsewhere before coming back (-3 mins) and at 18 ran straight from 17 but in retrospect wrong direction and could not work in out. Not helped by weather being completely foul, eventually relocated on 21 and rest of race ok but 8mins lost. Don't know how I made so many big Horlicks in what should have been quite straight forwards, need much better concentration

Friday Nov 10, 2017 #

orienteering (Urban) 1:13:08 [3] 8.0 km (9:09 / km)

Ran Blue course from Wednesday league Pomfrey. (6.7km) but also warm up and run back to car. Clearly not going very quickly

Thursday Nov 9, 2017 #

flat efforts 44:38 [4] 3.5 mi (12:45 / mi)

Pyramid session on the down 30 secs to 3 mins x 2 and back with max of 90 secs. Quite a warm day and not pushing it too much, so distances covered a bit less. However knee again not too bad after warm up.
Lets hope that by next week its a 'green light'

Wednesday Nov 8, 2017 #

orienteering race 1:02:28 [4] 7.0 km (8:55 / km)

BAOC odds and evens score event at Sir John Moore's barracks. Area is pretty much flat 1:5000 map, 50% grass land/ paths in barracks and 50% scrub/ wood surroundings. So ideal for fragile knee. Format of 20 controls then return to finish and 20 more, with the complexity of where you can cross the fence made for a rather frantic session. But an interesting day out in the sun and a nice contrast to last year's cross country which went everywhere. An enjoyable run, not really orienteering? but you did have to find lots of controls and I did lose time both finding flags and minor route choice errors.
Its worth commenting that those who had a strategy rather than get all on one map and see how much time is left had rather better scores. It also helps to start you watch as you go rather than guessing on route to no. 2! as penalties for lateness are heavy.
Knee fine during run but not in the car or on the stairs afterwards
1 AM

off road 15:00 [2] 0.8 mi (18:45 / mi)

Good long warm up.

Tuesday Nov 7, 2017 #

Note

Knee hurts going up and down stairs but loosened up during yesterdays walk
I think I might have slept in an odd position which put on a side load.
"You can only do what you can do" -so rather than trying to do a 'big November' stepping back to do good warming up and some more gentle level stuff.

off road 55:00 [2] 5.0 mi (11:00 / mi)

Run with Ash around Leigh Woods, staying on top of the hill. Avoided worst of rain. Good choice for knee

Monday Nov 6, 2017 #

Note

And just to rub salt.................my knee is really sore today and did not run.....Grrr

Sunday Nov 5, 2017 #

off road 15:00 [2] 1.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

orienteering race 1:19:23 [5] 8.0 km (9:55 / km)

November Classic Highland Water - I was really disappointed by this run - started ok, wasted a little time at 5, greener than expected and needed to hunt for the flag, losing momentum and missed 6 but went out re-located -lost 3 mins but not a complete disaster, long legs 7, 8, & 9 ok and fast round track to ap for 10 (racing some young runners on track) , no control (pit in bracken), hunted, could not understand veg but seemed ok, went out re-attacked back to same place, hunted, went out other way found bush and then flag, but loss of ten mins!. I really, really hate orienteering when its like this ......big grump and not very good over rest of course....
In retrospect I am pretty sure I had the track bend a bit wrong -gone too far and so was looking a bit too far north and just made it all fit....
The relocation was just very unprofessional.
Reasonably competitive speed wise if I remove the errors.....
Had targeted and tried hard for this race, but alas can expect another Congratulations this is your 22nd best result of the year you have dropped 10 places in the rankings e-mail.
I really do need an encouraging result sometime soon to restore morale.

Friday Nov 3, 2017 #

off road 2:10:00 [2] 10.0 mi (13:00 / mi)

Long slow distance run with Pete and Jo from park and ride at Odd Down in Bath. Headed through Limpley Stoke and Hinton Charterhouse. I don't pretend I know in detail where we went, or how far or the time.
Pete and Jo have been doing lots of this both running and walking, discovering new parts of the countryside. Very nice typically English countryside a shame a bit misty for most of the run but sun came out at the end. Knees a bit sore later in the run but ok afterwards. A long time since I have run this far. Really the equivalent of a CW leg

Thursday Nov 2, 2017 #

off road 1:27:54 [3] 8.0 mi (10:59 / mi)

Swineford -standard route to Round Hill quite quick,(3350) then second loop from North Stoke to Golf Course and Upton Cheyney. Seems long time since I have run this far, real plod later on. Knackered came home and had a kip.
Have run this route much quicker but will worry about times in the spring

Wednesday Nov 1, 2017 #

1 AM

road run 20:00 [2] 1.2 mi (16:40 / mi)

Warm up and run back to download
2 AM

orienteering race 1:08:22 [5] 8.6 km (7:57 / km)

BAOC Barossa - wood a joy to run in on a sunny day - very enjoyable course perhaps not very hard but a good run. No evidence of heavy legs as previous races and spiking the controls today
