Note

Knees not good took a walk

Wednesday Feb 27, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 12:00 [2] 0.5 km (24:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:36:34 [4] 8.3 km (11:38 / km)

BAOC at Fonthill, when I finished I was a bit surprised by the poor time it had not seemed that bad. Yes my foot had been sore and both knees ached so I knew I had been slow but I had really enjoyed the run in the warm sunshine. In retrospect I had made a couple of mistakes including overshooting 10 and stoping too early at 18 and also missed some obvious routes being penalised by what in part was quite heavy forest debris. Good race to go to

Tuesday Feb 26, 2019 #

off road 1:00:00 [2] 5.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Chatty run around Ashton Court in the sun with Ash.
Don't think I was up for much more today

Monday Feb 25, 2019 #

Note

Right knee painful today so took it as a rest day rather than run just a walk

Sunday Feb 24, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 20:00 [2] 1.5 km (13:20 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 45:20 [4] 4.3 km (10:33 / km)

Middle race- La Copa M50 35/88 winner 28.32. Very good middle race. Mistake at 3 -short leg went through intermediate feature but lost direction and went to wrong control -lost 3 mins -rest ok but struggling a bit physically particularly on downhills at 8 and 9

Saturday Feb 23, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 12:00 [2] 0.5 km (24:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 1:10:29 [5] 7.8 km (9:02 / km)

Long race at Las Minas M50 31/87 winner 45.55. Proper classic with log legs -took path options on 1-2 and 4-5 (a bit disappointed at the speed I managed). Was ok on the difficult 6-7 long one with tricky control but did lose 3 mins in the twiddles at 9
3 AM

road run 15:00 [2] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)

Warm up
4 AM

orienteering race (Urban) 15:58 [5] 2.2 km (7:15 / km)

Bullas -sprint race M50 33/58 winner 12.39. Fairly straight forward but again struggled with speed (breathing). Got a bit confused mid route 6-7 (concentration) and went to 8 instead of 7 but not a huge time loss and took wrong turning going uphill to 9. Lost over a minute in total most will have been clean

Friday Feb 22, 2019 #

Note

Good walk in the sun (3 hours) -started quite high and reached 1396m -really enjoyed this but getting a bit tired
1 AM

road run 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up
2 AM

orienteering race 18:06 [5] 2.6 km (6:58 / km)

Park race at Fuentes del Marques - ran through a tunnel, control 2 was odd, water features and horrendous green to run around -quite fun and no disasters but losing time as could not run fast enough -breathing was a bit poor

Thursday Feb 21, 2019 #

orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 7.0 km (17:09 / km)

'O' Training at El Pizcalejo - fierce gorge through middle of map which course crossed 5 times! First crossing 2-3 I did find a way down a spur but only way I could get up was off to the right which took me off the map to an area which resembled the moon I managed to cling on to the crags long enough to reach an orchard and relocate -how odd is that... only in Spain, Did course in a different order which took out two crossings -really enjoyed the rest but took 2 hours and was exhausted at the finish

Wednesday Feb 20, 2019 #

orienteering 1:30:00 [3] 9.0 km (10:00 / km)

Training at Canada de Canera -really nice area (been here before) -stopped short at 2 and lost time because nor read map carefully enough -rest went well and enjoyable but surprisingly quite slow. Includes long run too and from start/ finish

Tuesday Feb 19, 2019 #

orienteering 3:00:00 [3] 9.0 km (20:00 / km)

Orienteering training at Sierra del Molino (trained here before but map extended).
First exercise set by Mark control picking - about 4 km had to find tapes to bring them back! lost time on two but still surprised took nearly 90 mins.
Drink and then ran straight out on training did about 5km but missed out some of the fierce mountain legs. Quite hot and dehydrated.
Good days technical training

Monday Feb 18, 2019 #

orienteering 1:30:00 [3] 7.0 km (12:51 / km)

Orienteering training -LLano de Arriba -classic had been here before -great area - did not get maps till very late in the day so had to truncate course -pleased with compass accuracy in the green

Thursday Feb 14, 2019 #

Note

Travel to Sheffield and a couple of days with Laura and Evie, who were both in good form

Wednesday Feb 13, 2019 #

orienteering race 1:31:34 [4] 8.4 km (10:54 / km)

MLS race at Long Valley South. Went straight to the first control through white wood which turned out to be heavy bramble; ended up with a huge banana and about the slowest split, mused on how long I might have taken to jog round the path route.....also was not straight enough to 2 and 3 as the tour of the Surrey bramble continued. So really started race on the fourth leg. Going to 10 spurned the simple RHS route around fenced enclosure and went around the LHS leaving at the wrong corner to a distant sort of parallel place.....this took a while to sort out. (4 mins? ) Rest ok but just slow. A nice sunny day quite a challenging area but disappointed again with performance never really got going at anything more than a potter.
1 AM

off road 10:00 [2] 0.5 km (20:00 / km)

Warm up

Tuesday Feb 12, 2019 #

flat efforts 55:00 [4] 4.0 mi (13:45 / mi)

Oldbury Court 11 x 2mins with 90 secs. A really messy session....breathing was a challenge throughout -also disrupted by dogs, so ended up with some bigger gaps. Best news was the session was completed without injury or incident and as I don't seem to be able to run fast at all at the moment lots of scope for improvement

Monday Feb 11, 2019 #

off road 1:15:20 [3] 6.5 mi (11:35 / mi)

CW north from Old Sodbury. Tired before I started so went for truncated version. Nice day but struggled on the way out to turn at 40.00, a bit better on the way back in particular pushed on across the fort. Not to bad overall

Sunday Feb 10, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 15:00 [3] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)

Warm up, foot quite sore before I started
2 AM

orienteering race 1:37:30 [4] 7.4 km (13:11 / km)

Merthyr Mawr event, really nice day, dunes in great condition and really good course but disappointing performance. Slow over whole course, don't really know why and two rubbish and no excuse mistakes at 16 and 19 reading map wrong and then slow to fix.

Saturday Feb 9, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 1:14:29 [3] 7.0 mi (10:38 / mi)

From Blathwayt Arms, Langridge Church, up hill round the battlefield, golf course and round south edge of golf course (i,e. longer Tuesday run option).
Foot did not like cow meadow and strong adverse wind later on quite challenging. Otherwise all went well and a little tired afterwards - probably trying quite hard today
2 AM

orienteering race (Night) 58:27 [3] 4.0 km (14:37 / km)

WNL at Leigh Woods - wanted to check out light and just do some night O. Stayed on the plateau - found quite a lot of controls in a rather crazy order. Really struggled with no 29 -went right out to big path junction and then came back. Progress steady

Friday Feb 8, 2019 #

off road 1:08:00 [3] 6.0 mi (11:20 / mi)

Very heavy rain, windy but un-seasonally warm. Went to Leigh Woods as it provides some shelter even in very heavy rain and took the keeping high option rather than running on the towpath. Started in my waterproof cag. (too hot) then just a 'T' shirt (too wet), then back to the cag.
Did I mention it was very heavy rain...……surprising how much fun running in the rain actually can be!

Thursday Feb 7, 2019 #

off road 1:14:32 [3] 7.0 mi (10:39 / mi)

Portishead coast path - I do an out and back which relies on a time rather than a distance. I have got further...…..but did run back quite well and quickly. Which is good news even if the strong south westerly wind from directly behind might have helped

Wednesday Feb 6, 2019 #

1 AM

off road 10:00 [2] 0.6 km (16:40 / km)

Warm up -back quite sore - perhaps due to car journey -not getting ant easier during warm up, so set off to the start in some trepidation
2 AM

orienteering race 1:13:34 [5] 8.9 km (8:16 / km)

BAOC at Barosa, always enjoy orienteering here and yes it is quite straightforward but still lovely terrain to run through. Time of year and perhaps the recent snow meant that it was even quicker. Probably a bit too conservative and used tracks when not necessary. Back did loosen up after the first few which was good news but then could feel hamstring which was not. Overall not too bad but in addition to the seemingly never ending list of issues I have clearly lost some general fitness -which can be addressed

Tuesday Feb 5, 2019 #

off road 41:03 [3] 3.5 mi (11:44 / mi)

Half a loop of Blaise Castle just to see if back was an issue. So just a potter and not too bad

Note

I twisted whilst lifting kitchen surface which was probably a bit too heavy and had a twinge in my lower back LHS. Quite uncomfortable in normal life trying to sleep. sitting in the car but seemingly no worse running....all a bit odd

Monday Feb 4, 2019 #

off road 1:14:12 [3] 6.0 mi (12:22 / mi)

Same run om Purdown as yesterday -except its warm and the snow has gone as have the Mudclaws - so now very wet and greasy -so only walking was on a couple of steep ups or downs where the Asics allow zero traction.
Just to be different I now have a slight side/ back strain from lifting a (heavy) kitchen surface segment

Sunday Feb 3, 2019 #

off road 1:21:25 [3] 6.0 mi (13:34 / mi)

Snow is thawing as the afternoon has got warmer so I expect today may be the last snowy run. Still some ice sheets so again walked sections. Standard Purdown run. Time was quite disappointing because I thought I was running a little better today. Could just feel hamstring - really from the start but got no worse (I did not push as time witnesses.) This did not spoil my enjoyment on another splendid day for running. Maybe it was a good idea to give today's orienteering a miss

Saturday Feb 2, 2019 #

off road 1:36:10 [3] 8.0 mi (12:01 / mi)

Another opportunity to run in the snow and this time bright sunshine. Some thawing and then a freeze overnight had left a number of pavement etc. icy and in mudclaws (although great in snow) a bit lethal so ended up walking a few sections. Frome Valley route again, this time same but different and included Oldbury Court. So enjoyed a nice if slow run. Only downside is that I could feel hamstring, which had not bothered me for a while .

Friday Feb 1, 2019 #

off road 1:23:05 [3] 7.0 mi (11:52 / mi)

Xmas card snow arrived overnight, very un-Bristol like I would say it was >4" So good fun to run in often virgin snow. Quite slow and a bit tiring so one of the shorter Frome valley options. Absolutely brilliant to see so many kids out - every slope in the valley will be sledged out by dusk -I have said before that this is the way to address childhood obesity but it had not previously occurred to me before that snowmen should pay tax - with the numbers around today this would quickly eliminate the need for austerity!
