Orienteering hills 1:00:00 [1] ***

AM Training Session at Hickory run, led our excellent instructor Sandy. Route Choice and Planning exercise. Forgot to turn on Garmin, so, pedometer says 2 miles. 2 hours elapsed time, about 1 hour actual movement time.
1 PM

Walking intervals 30:00 [1] * 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

After Lunch, did the pace count exercises to determine my pace count over varying terrains. Road = 105 steps/100 m. Trail with slight incline = 110 steps/100m. Open woods = 115 steps/100m. Rough fight = 125 steps/100 m. Did both directions.
2 PM

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] *** 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Afternoon training session with Sandy and the crew. More of a compass bearing and feature interpretation exercise. We'd hit 4-5 controls in short 10-15 minute bursts then strategize how to approach the next 4-5. Very cool learning experience. Pedo says 3 miles, moving time about 60 minutes and 2 hrs for the exercise. This training weekend was such a great program with knowledgeable and patient instructors!
4 PM

Orienteering 15:00 [1] *** 0.5 mi (29:59 / mi)

Did some of the "blind compass" exercise, but then I realized I probably need to be heading home (and things were getting tired and stiffening up), so I called it a day, thanked our instructor and hit the road back to Alientown.

Hiking warm up/down 45:00 [1] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi) +25m 14:37 / mi

Dad is getting some stitches out of his nose today, and I am the shuttle. So, a nice walk in the disappearing humidity....

Rode X Bike a touch to burn some adipose...

Cutting Lawn intervals 30:00 [2]

Considering I am going to be in Hickory Run all weekend, and the lawn refuses to stop growing or cut itself, I guess I needed to do it. Worked up a little sweat. Achilles soreness almost totally gone today.

Achilles feeling better. I need to look into a way to treat this annoyance and still maintain my workout levels. I guess dropping those couple pounds I alluded to yesterday may help....

Ex Bike 1:00:00 [3]

Lunctime fat burn. Felt good and the achilles is feeling better. May actually start forcing myself to eat less calorie rich food - may try to loose a few pounds. Some vegetarian pasta for lunch today.

(injured)

Really bad right achilles. Limped to and from car a few times and about the office. Icing helped to dull the ache...

Walking warm up/down 6 [0] 0.75 km (8 / km)

I should not even count this, but the precedent has been set by others. Walked to the start, walked there again to help Steve A start folks. Walked back with a friend after cleaning up the start area. Distance was 250 m of the harshest mowed grass that Green Lane has to offer. :=) This gets a 0 for intensity, but the socialization and helping out the clubbe that made it worthwhile. I did get the portobellos and romaine on the way home.

Orienteering race 1:31:07 [3] *** 9.2 km (9:54 / km) +170m 9:04 / km

Much fun down in Green Lane today on a initially sticky but weather getting better as the day went on kind of day. Overall, happy with my run, but I forgot to turn on my GPS watch and did not realize it until the 3rd control D'Oh. So, for the routegadget stalkers, you will only get an estimate. ;-) The distance is from deviation from as the crow flies to my actual course, which is actually 6.7 km. I like this longer course thing, being built more for endurance than speed.

Critiques and Commentary:

Had some trouble initially on 1-3 getting distracted by groupthink as I caught up to some other folks who started before me, so I can relate that others are more of a distraction that a help.

4-7 gradually built elevation and I think some of my recent jogging is helping me out here.

8-11 Down to Neptune's railroad on a steep but pretty descent. Control 10's view was beautiful - could consider planting a letterbox in this area at some point. Took trail downhill to 11.

12-14 Up da hill again, lungs feeling good. Took trail and nailed 13. 14 was my achilles heel - overcompensated after navigating around the mother of all fallen trees and ended up too far down the hill in the next gully over. Found trail and relocated and found it pretty quickly.

15-17 Pretty easy, just follow compass and trail.

18 This was fun - found a safeish place to cross the mother of all ditches (MOAD) after realizing it would have been a little better to go west on the road a bit to avoid the MOAD's. Found the re-entrant (word of the week) pretty quickly after that.

19-F Jogging time, occasionally walking, especially in control areas.

Got to socialize and help Steve A start folks afterwards. A good hiking friend came up and did Yellow today and we had a little time to catch up after helping Steve take down the starting area.

A funny thing just occurred to me. For the first time ever on green, I came in first on a single leg. That has not happened since orange last year.

Thanks for a fun event and a nice long green course!
