Orienteering race ("Long") 44:29 [5] **** 2.96 mi (15:02 / mi) +105m 13:32 / mi
spiked:5/6c shoes: VJ Falcon

Sassafras Woods. Lots of trail running and popping into the woods to grab a control. I like that format. Woods were nicer than the middle the day before. Didn't really make any big mistakes and only a few little ones. Really enjoyed the run. Map had two different contour intervals which was unique. Had a faster time than on the middle the day before. On the way to 3 got confused by the trails but pressed on and finally got it to make sense. Turned off trail a few meters early for 6 but figured it out pretty quickly. Sometimes when you are running fast on a trail it can be difficult to keep track of where you are. Baseplate compass.

Fun hanging out with the other BFLO and ROCers during the event.

Orienteering race (sprint) 19:37 [5] ** 1.62 mi (12:07 / mi) +21m 11:38 / mi
spiked:11/12c shoes: VJ Falcon

Fireman's Park. A park sprint with only a couple of controls having route choice opportunities. Rain threatening but not an issue. Control 1, probably went too far along trail before climbing fence. Control was visible way off on the route I took. Blew 2. Got too low too soon. Kept moving in generally correct direction but slowly. Nothing matched up until finally it did. After that just hard running through open parkland. Thumb compass.

Orienteering race (Middle) 1:05:24 [5] ***** 2.48 mi (26:22 / mi) +153m 22:08 / mi
spiked:14/17c shoes: VJ Falcon

Fireman's Park. I was slow in too many places, but never made any big errors except maybe not picking fast enough routes. Map was very difficult to read at 1:10. I would have liked 1:7,5. Had a bad choice to 5 climbing in and out of the steep re-entrant but missed the trail that went around. At 10 went in too low and lost a minute. On 15 didn't go to the trail quickly enough and spent too much time in the thorns. On the way to 17 should have stayed more easterly in order to avoid the tall fence. Otherwise happy with my effort since I didn't make even one huge mistake. Baseplate compass.

Was going to run in the cemetery but the gate was closed for the burial of the officer who tragically died. So decided to run in the neighborhood. It started raining pretty hard so cut it off at 30 minutes. Not too uncomfortable for that length of time.

Putting out controls for the meet tomorrow in the Sardinia Forest. Beautiful day in the woods. Had a little trouble on a couple.

trail running race 26:29 [5] 3.14 mi (8:26 / mi) +6m 8:23 / mi

Herring Point 5k Classic in Delaware while on vacation. Nice course. Nice weather. Finished second in M70. Not a huge turnout by Buffalo standards, but then, the race wasn't in Buffalo. Cape Henlopen State Park might be a good location for an O-map. I wonder if DVOA or QOC have looked at it.

Tried to keep up a steady pace. Partly on the roads, partly on the boardwalk, partly on the beach. No need for sunscreen today, but pleasant temps for walking.

Note

Couldn’t decide whether to go for a run in the drizzle and wind or have a scotch on the rocks. Decided to compromise and have the scotch while wearing my running shorts.

First vacation run at Dewey Beach on Thompson Island Preserve Trail. This is the trail that shows up on my mapping website. Fairly hot but a good breeze and plenty of shade on the trail. Lovely woods but admonishments to keep on the trail. Subtle elevation changes but a huge marsh.

Checking out Cazenovia Park for a possible map. Running on a variety of surfaces. The park is nice. Didn't get onto the golf course - at least not intentionally.
