Skate Skiing warm up/down 20:00 [1] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

12 PM

Ski-O race 27:50 [3] 3.0 mi (9:17 / mi) +60m 8:44 / mi
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Craftsbury Middle Day 1. I was quite nervous at the start, forgot to push the Garmin into tracking (I'll check Jim's data), not enough time to fold the map, so I just let it dangle down one side, Could not locate things on the map - where was the start triangle - obviously I did not read the directions to ski the shoot, so I was just stupidly standing there starring at the map for a long time.

But then I had my route to 1 well planned and cruised through the arena. The course was technically easier than I expected. Comparable to Gunstock with mostly wide trail skiiing but numerous shortcuts to take if on dares. So it flowed pretty nicely - I took the shortcuts on the flats and downs, and went around on the uphills.

I had a 1 minute mistake to 10, missing a turn-off back to the wide trail. The rest was fine. I was cautious overall, so could have been a bit faster in decision making. But better safe than sorry, especially since this was my only Ski-O so far this season ! First in my age class, Jim took second, beating the Canadians and the Europeans. Let's keep this order for day 2!
5 PM

Road Running 30:17 [2] 3.46 mi (8:45 / mi) +70m 8:14 / mi
shoes: On Cloudflow dark grey

The Finnish team that stays at same place (Highland Lodge) inspired me to do a jog. So I ran down the road to the village and back. Beautiful sunset over the lake. I was able to run on the mud-seasoned shoulder, which was still a bit soft from the warm day. Kept a steady pace without forcing any tempo.

Ski-O 45:00 [2] 2.5 mi (18:00 / mi) +80m 16:22 / mi
shoes: Atomic Skate RS9

Craftsbury Model Event - W across the streets from the Sports Center. Lots of dirty snow, some grass to step over, soft but turning faster as temps are dropping. While snow is minimal in places, conditions are actually quite good. You could ski anywhere off-trail as long as there is snow. I like the new lidar-based map. We'll see tomorrow.
Did not turn my Garmin on. Also stopped for chatting (Mitch). All are good estimates.

Skate Skiing 1:45:10 [3] 11.9 mi (8:50 / mi) +400m 8:00 / mi
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

Training in Jackson, incl. peering at Ski-O maps while skiing. I have to relearn all this multi-tasking. ~ 40 degrees and getting slushy in sun-exposed areas. Ellis to Wifferdil to S Hall, then down the Keeney, then N on the Ellis for a while but turned around as my stomach was growling for badly needed lunch.
1 PM

Skate Skiing 1:44:55 [3] 11.55 mi (9:05 / mi) +310m 8:23 / mi
shoes: Rossi Xium Skate

After a yummy soup at Madeleine's, drove up to Prospect Farm, where there had been grooming going on in the late morning. Tried the Fisher Revolutions for the first .6 mile but they were such awful clunkers, it made the difference between pleasant to dreadful. Of course it was after lunch, and the slush was now getting worse in the sun. So went back to the car and grabbed the Rossis. But I did use 10cm shorter poles, which did slow me down . Another set of Ski-O courses on my mapholder.
First the Boggy Brook out and back, then made it up to Orchard trail and did all side trails, but could not stomach going all the way to the top of the Wildcat Valley trail - just too steep in these conditions.

Trail running 27:05 [2] 2.68 mi (10:06 / mi) +25m 9:49 / mi
shoes: On Cloudflow dark grey

Run to work on trails, usual way. A few remaining ice patches made for a bit of a slow down.
5 PM

Trail running 34:23 [2] 3.55 mi (9:41 / mi) +50m 9:17 / mi
shoes: On Cloudflow dark grey

Running home just before dark. Via Waterworks to W Foss Farm to Spruce Wood, then an extra loop around the hole. Just trying to be comfortable but pushing a tiny bit. Getting used to the idea of regular running.
