Orienteering race 57:03 [4] 8.0 km (7:08 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 Black

IOC Long - The Burren - 6.8Km 165m
Good varied course with the controls in the forest being particularly tricky. Generally more physical than expected. Knew the forest was going to be slow but surprised by how much vegetation there was out in the open.

Lost about 30s at 7 which was a surprise given how accurate a bearing I'd used. Lucky at 10, but hesitant. Lost 15s at 11 thanks to deciding the control was on a spur rather than in a re-entrant. About 45s on 12 - bit suspicious of the map given that I'd gone past the boulder exactly as intended.

Physically reasonable. Deliberately concentrated on getting things right rather than running hard. Almost pain-free, but SI a bit sore and that made it harder running over the rougher terrain and climbing the numerous fences.

SI area quite sore later in the evening after the flight.

Orienteering race 38:02 [4] 6.0 km (6:20 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 Black

IOC Middle Distance - Castle Archdale - 4.6Km

Poor run. Leg locked up earlier in the morning. It had recovered but was a distraction and spent too much time concentrating on running rather than navigating. In the end legs were basically fine - calf was only very mildly sore at the end.

Problems were mainly caused by the vagueness of the terrain. Lost time on 1,3,5-6,6-7,15, but the main time loss was about 3 mins on 5 where I didn't have a proper plan and then couldn't recognse any definite features near the control. Not far away from it, but never knew exactly where I was until I went back up to the veg. boundary.
Was also very slow getting across fences and very deep ditches, mainly because I was trying to protect the leg.

Orienteering race 12:02 [4] 3.0 km (4:01 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 Black

IOC Sprint Champs - Florencecourt - M50
A lot more fun than expected. The previous map wasn't promising, but there was quite a bit of variety and the planning made good use of the area.
Calf feeling niggly leading up to the event, but only started to feel sore in the last couple of minutes of the race, though had been protecting it to an extent. Lost about 30s 1-2 as just got confused in the middle of the leg - shouldn't have followed the elephant track! A couple of small hesitations towards the end as it was actually quite difficult to keep on top of the navigation at times. Beaten by an M16, though not be any old men.

Running 29:17 [3] 6.0 km (4:53 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus 33 Blue

HB - Clough - Bingham Park loop (same as Wednesday 2 weeks ago).
Was not intending to run but thought I'd be in quite a state if I didn't run today, and, as the calf was feeling fine, went for it.
In general better than I've felt running since I got here. The calf started hurting after about 15 mins, but never got too bad and the pain eased off relatively quickly afterwards. Went at a decent pace to try to get a feel for how I might cope with a sprint on Friday - over 5 minutes quicker than 2 weeks ago!
