Irish Champs middle distance
Not supposed to be running of course. Managed not to run yesterday and had been quite sore. Went for a bit of a walk somewhere near Loch Tay in the morning and was struggling. Went to the event just to talk to people. And then the mist came down, and suddenly it was very tempting...
Tried a bit of jogging, and it was sore, but not getting obviously worse, and it seemed to be just muscle pain. So found myself changed and in the start boxes against all sense.
Never tried to race, but found I could run to some extent though struggled downhill. Was getting pretty sore by 6, so gave up there. In the end did all of it except for 9 and 10, but the second half was a mixture of jogging and walking. Didn't feel too bad afterwards - obviously sore, but nothing like the pain after NZ Sprint Champs, and seemed mostly back to normal by the evening.
Race was an experience. Not really concentrating on navigation and it showed. Very tricky in the mist, not helped by the map which was very variable. Lost some time at 5, searching in boulders above the control. Then lost concentration on the way to 6 after changing route to try to find easier running and then finding a tape but no control on a nearby boulder. Lost a heap of time on 7, but hadn't intended to try to find it until I was almost there. Lots of contour detail not on the map - not very fair. Also lost time on 13 again largely due to the mapping. Results very random - could have won by several minutes without the injury, but everyone could have run a lot better. Would probably have been OK with either good visibility or a good map, but the combination of the fog and the map meant it wasn't a fair race.
