Note
(rest day)

3-hours of sleep again after driving home from Chicago. Exhausted getting up for work and knowing that I have a rough week of work ahead and further losses of sleep. My inflammation isn't going anywhere either. Day off is necessary, but I still plan on keeping the body moving and running.

After a great time at Runyon's wedding I did get in the car and head back to Indiana Dunes State Park. an old favorite and a place I planned on running as soon as I saw I was heading to Chicago. I remembered that trail 10 was just beach running in the second half but didn't remember as much sand on trail 9. But it was always run-able. Was trail 2 un-runable back in the day? I just can't remember.

Today was the best by far that I have felt. I actually felt like I could and should push. I ran out of gas when the storm hit, but fear and exhilaration kept it alive there. I was exposed on top of dunes with lightning striking close and just crushing rain. Beautiful to see it moving out over the lake... every nerve was definitely alive on the second half of this run.

Back to one of my favorite places and it has probably been 15 years... The boardwalk on trail 2 was probably closed then and I avoided it. So that was an out and back to start. Then trail 10 and 9 and the absolute deluge that hit... Then the lightening when I was exposed on top of the dunes on 9! Beautiful watching the storm moving over the lake though. Trail 9 was a slog through horizontal rain and saturated sand... Great fun!

I guess the rain messed with the heart-rate monitor. Obviously not the correct data. My car was in like 8 inches of water when I got back and everything in the car was covered with water and soaked sand by the time I changed. Totally worth it but wow.. that storm came on an crushed. I was tempting fate the entire time as storm clouds were everywhere on my approach to the park. I got away with it for half the run though.

Still... feels like forever since my glutes have been engaged on a run.

Got in at 1:00 am and met up with Cowan at the backer. Again to little sleep - actually worried about the drive home. Playing this whole trip by winging it, just like college, and crashed at a friend of Cowan's place and then just paid for a few meals at the reunion while popping in and around. After breakfast at North Dinning hall checked out the reunion possibilities and then woke J.R. up in Zahm for a run.

Finally, out of shape teammates were able to slow me down to get out of zone 3. We went slow and didn't even leave campus. I felt like I wanted to go longer and go over to SMC but J.R. wasn't ready to leave campus. We went 4- miles at over 8-minute pace. My knee didn't feel great and my form was completely off, but it was easy enough to feel OK.

We stopped at the Grotto and then went over to the class picture and then Cowan and I headed out to extend the run.

Second half of run after a break for class picture and just Cowan and I. Felt like we were going faster and we weren't. Knee did feel like it took some beating by the time 8-miles in total were complete. Probably shouldn't have gone out for second half of run. Hit the cemetery off of the SMC access road to look for Father Hesburgh's grave and headed off to investigate rumors of the closure of deep trail. It was fenced off and grown over. Disappointing to see that change, but still ran through the lack of changes on the general SMC campus and total changes everywhere at Holy Cross. Always great to run there. Great day at the reunion and stayed for the class dinner and headed off for Chicago in the morning for Runyon's wedding.

Took off after work to head out for a busy weekend with reunion at ND and Runyon's wedding. My sleep is going to take an even further hit and the inflammation of the season is definitely a huge factor in things right now. I plan to run every day because I have made a decision to keep my knee and my body moving. I am going to be in places I love and remember and that is something I do not want to miss anyway... so it works. I started the weekend with a little closer look at the Cuyahoga National Park with some waterfalls and trails. Did some research during the day and picked the trails out of Boston. Good choice. Not great trails, but some interesting new stuff for me decently close to home.

Tried and easy run (again my heart rate might suggest not...) Felt like trying to teach my body that running is ok. Man did everything get bad quick during this last week.

Had to walk a bit around brandywine falls due to a missing bridge causing a ford of the creek and some stairs (down). Took s few wrong turns, some stuff was really well marked, and then some others... Enjoyed the run, felt a little better then I have in last week, but that may just be the fact that I a in a new place and I just felt better... but still didn't feel good. Walked down paved hill in end. I did feel a little bit more free on uphill work.

Trying again to go easy and keep moving. Keeping it very short again, but a little longer and a little better then yesterday. Still not feeling form and all zone 3 again. Not going easy enough, but am going short.

Sleep is not good and my body is full of inflammation. I need to get more rest and won't going away this weekend. This summer I need to find my stress and maybe diet(?) and sleep coming back into a good place.

Road Running 22:07 intensity: (25 @0) + (19 @1) + (6:50 @2) + (10:48 @3) + (3:45 @4) 3.01 mi (7:21 / mi) +35ft 7:16 / mi
ahr:144 max:168 shoes: Brooks Pure Flow

My knee isn't doing great and neither are my sleep patterns (so far from enough- some nights with just a few hours) and it appears that it is that time of the season for the inflammation to just be there no matter what, but know that my knee is probably better off if I keep running. Trying to go easy and slow. Didn't accomplish any of it. Stopped 3-miles in. Felt awful. 7:21 pace probably wasn't slow enough- look at heart-rate.. still a lot of zone 3. Problem was, I wasn't feeling my form at any pace. Tight and no feel of a flow with the road (trail).

hiking/ walking 1:00:00 [3] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Went for a walk after info session in Homestead. Stopped a bunch to read signs along trail, especially at the pumphouse. Don't stop as much when running or biking through. Left achillis/ plantar fascia was pretty irritated at end after only walking a few miles.
