Actual Climb: 220 m

The weather was perfect for this meet. It was kind of cold and breezy in the parking area but once I got into the woods and got moving it asn't bad at all. I started with a winter hat on but I eventually took that off. I kept my gloves on for a little longer before taking them off too.

I headed off in the wrong direction when going from start to 1. The control was basically due west of start but I started by heading southwest. I was looking for the fence that was marked on the map. I knew that I wasn't where I thought I was when I found the 10th control but it did help me to redirect and find 1.

I made a another mistake while headed for 2. I made it about halfway from 1 to 2 when I saw a field. I mistook it for another field and started to cross it. It wasn't until I saw the power lines that I realized I had goofed. I hadn't crossed under the power lines yet. I found 3 before I found 2. The two controls were relatively close together. I saw a lot of other people in the woods during this stretch and got a lot of inadvertent help finding both these controls.

I also got some help finding 4. The next three controls I found all on my own. and without too much trouble. The trails were not marked on the maps but the roads were. I used the trails a little bit but for the most part I either followed natural terrain features or the roads.

I got some help finding 8 from a couple guys who showed up at 7 just after I got there. Presumably I helped to lead them to it. I'm pretty sure I would have been able to find 8 on my own without any trouble if they had not been there.

The trip from 8 to 9 was probably the longest of the course. I started by heading due south until I got to the camping area. From there I followed the road for a few minutes before turning off the road and cutting cross country again. I found 9 without too much trouble. It was very close to a trail, which was of course not marked on the map.

The last two controls weren't difficult to find. I had already been to 10, so I knew exactly where it was. The last control was more or less due north of 10. It was pretty easy to navigate that leg and the terrain was distinctive enough that it wasn't confusing at all.

I think I chose the right course. I though about Brown but it was too short. Red probably would have been a little too long for me. This was just my 4th orienteering meet, not counting the one which I meet directed, since the beginning of September.
