Brown Course (12 controls, 4.6 km, 195 m)

Actual Distance Traveled: 6.1 km
Actual Climb: 323 m

The weather was unseasonably warm. The ground was thawing and a little muddy in most places, very muddy in a few. For the most part the biggest challenge was the physical one. There was a lot of climbing.

I chose to do the Brown Course because I agreed to help out from 12 - 1:30. Rather than run a course after my shift I chose to do one before. Considering how long the courses were I guessed that I wouldn't have enough time to do anything longer than the Brown and I was correct.

I ws the first person to start on any course. I was the first person to finish the Brown course so for a few minutes I was in first place. Ultimately I slipped to 21st out of about 50.

For the most part the controls weren't hard to find. I went past 9/104 and had to go back to find it. I was too low on the hillside on my first attempt. I walked right past 10/107. I might have spotted it if I had just looked to my left but I think my focus was to my right. I spotted it once I was on the trail but I had already passed it at that point. I only saw because I looked back just in case I might have done what I did do.

The course designer (Kim Jepsen) warned that some controls were close together that weren't part of the same course. I encountered this issue a few times, most notably when I was looking for 9/104 I found what I thought was it only to discover that it was another control not part of the Brown.

If I had not volunteered then I probably would have done Green instead. I'm not sure that I could have finished Red in under 3 hours.
