Walking 2:00:00 [3] 5.36 km (22:23 / km) +1029m 11:25 / km

Really too much the day after the Swiss O week; Helen’s friend suggested a nice “lake/waterfall walk”. With gondola ride down. But.......

Both H & I really struggled, we thought it may be 800m up but instead was 1.029m. Legs v tired/heavy. I had a funny turn when we got back, lost my voice, went slightly hypo, & it wasn’t the best end to a fabulous week. Let’s hope I can recover properly now :-/

Orienteering race 57:08 [5] 5.9 km (9:41 / km) +190m 8:20 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

swiss o week final day, rain , misty, felt very keen & OK. 4.8km but v wet & slidy / muddy with much traversing over streams- not my thing! Started v well indeed but as soon as the course went over to the wet slope, i slowed and was not able to use my lethal weapon, ie. my pace. long long leg took me 13 mins , 2 mins lost; poor at no 8 another 1 min. but everyone else ra amazingly well, esp Kaspar Oettli & now i know why . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaspar_Oettli

Stunned to be only 9th. under 900 points - had half expected a stage win (!) with such a "clean" run. Even two of the "urban" guys beat me today!). I guess others got into the O as the week progressed , whereas I arrived rested but on top prep from Slovenia etc.

Podium for 3rd overall, delighted, plus 4 stage podiums (2 2nd & 2 3rd), and new friends made in the world of German speaking Swiss orienteers. The best week of the trip so far! :-)

Winsplits show the sorry tale - I cannot move on mud & steep slopes, esp downhill. Any leg that was physical - ie. steep up, &/or track running - I won.

Swiss o Week day 5 - middle, rougment, downhill mainly, good run, caugh rene Bock 2 mins after no 3 & he helped me, esp at no 7 where i missed & he said "it's back there". slow on no 8 but then tore down hill & felt confident, yesterdays winner messed up badly today, i did not. caught Rene on run in (!) despite seeing him leave no 14. he doesn't stop!!!!

2nd in stage, very pleased, podium guaranteed now.

Orienteering race 58:42 [5] 6.79 km (8:39 / km) +382m 6:45 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Swiss O week day 4. Hornberg, v tough course tho open runnable in places. Feet getting sore.

One of the favourites started 3 mins ahead & I fancied seeing him but didn’t . Easy early on then difficulty finding flag no 4. V good to no 7 (tricky!), but then totally misread slope direction., 2 mins lost , then suddenly made 3 1-min errors in a row- 2 of which were careless/rushing too much.

6th, 4 mins down. Not a disaster but I need to stay in control. The top Swiss finishers could not match my running splits. I lost the stage: could have been =1st.

Orienteering race 44:24 [5] 5.21 km (8:31 / km) +210m 7:06 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Swiss o week day 3. Above col Du pillon again. 4.1k/lots of climb.

No 1 again stumped me- entered forest & there was an unmapped gate/track- people milling around- forest v vague. Tried to pace count & contour & started panicking as I was unable to locate anything solid. A quick banana to 2 women talking , & luckily found control . 1-2 mins could have been much longer.

Rest ok but no 4, went to hard down hill & nearly lost contact. Rescued it then committed to being careful. Some easier legs on tracks & easier open legs near end. Reckoned I would be under 43 mins but the heat & climb slowed me/everyone- 3rd, 44 secs down, same 2 guys ahead as yesterday. Another podium- won sausages. Hmm!

Orienteering race 54:59 [5]
shoes: VJ Integrators

Swiss o week stage 2- long, above Col du Pillon. 6km/290m

Good run tho no 1 was appalling!!! (1min)- others lost a LOT more; I was gobsmacked not to nail it. Hidden/ vague. Open hillside, runnable , crags etc. My sort of thing. Annoyed to miss no 11 (careless)-1 min+. Strong finish despite another fiendish control later (looked easy - wasn’t). Ankle sore . Lake nice to put in sore feet! Altitude 1680-2200m. Views awesome.

Lying 3rd when we left, not far behind. Two Swiss started the revenge today, tho I took out Czech jan N. :-)

Orienteering race (Urban ) 17:30 [5] 3.49 km (5:01 / km) +40m 4:45 / km
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

Swiss O week day 1 urban sprint- Gstaad. Hot! Small error on 4 & later; 25-45 seconds in total? Not a bad run. 2nd to Jan of Czech who I’ve been battling since Italy. 6 secs down. Podium/prize :-)

12 Swiss m55’s piles up behind me, keen no doubt to take bitter revenge once the real O starts. No Olly Bulholzer, tho (thankfully)

Note

Registered for Swiss O week in Gstaad

Walked some of the training in Saanan with Helen & Ruth (novice), took it very steady, then some of the urban training in the same village, distracted by antiques market, also very hot.

Races start tomorrow - great.
