Orienteering 33:36 [3] 4.5 km (7:28 / km) +120m 6:35 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

British relay champs, M50, 4km.

last leg, Clive back in 1st by 3 minutes, but Matthew in his first outing in the A team (Mark S sadly with injury & also a mild cold), blew it under pressure & took nearly (!) 10 mins longer (46 mins!) than I feel he could have achieved, by which time we were down in 4th. Gutted! SYO B team miles ahead now !

Tried hard from the off, and luckily no real fuckups in the first rough/ technical part of the course (~1 minute at no 3 - stupid). Took a good route out up west to the ruin, then things started really going my way as I tore down into the runnable western bit & properly started my trademark agonizing relay self-abuse.

Ran all the way up the open hill and to my horror, saw the SYO B team (Paul Taylor ) at the top of the 3rd last control re-entrant. I would have to hurt myself some more!

Luckily, Paul isn't the fastest of track runners, and like me he had no SiAC, so when i jumped him right after dibbing the 2nd last control, i went clear immediately. I assumed i was denying him (a friend) his first bronze for SYO, as I'd not seen TVOC (Roger T) anywhere. But, as per bloody usual, the commentary announced me as being in SECOND place again, Quite frankly, having heard that, i should have just stopped on the run in as I had the previous day & got a bronze for a change!

DElighted with my time, but worth noting that although i was faster than Tim Tett in SYO A, Bill E. in their B team went fastest at 30:53. Clive's 29:54 is for a 3.9km course, and is.... well, it's just Clive, isn't it. Happy that the best team won on the day tho & we denied them a whitewash (just).

Quentin beat me too - second on my course - natch. Note my later splits. spot the acceleration! :)

Orienteering 45:00 [1] 4.0 km (11:15 / km) +80m 10:14 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Went back to High Dam with Charlie to try and find no's 2,3 & 4 from yesterday, as I had no idea what to do.

Turns out i hadn't gone far enough down the hill by a long way. In my defence, when we were half way down, i showed Chas the confusing patch of flat / green / sunny ground that had foiled me yesterday. He was also unsure for a moment what on earth that was on the map? but told me to stick to my bearing & , lo & Behold, things finally came into view & the control became trivial,

no 3 was fine, elephant track/contour then wall then nav in. no 4 - lesson to learn - Chas had pretty much walked it - beat Clive on the leg - it was TD -enormous and to do these legs, I need to pretty much stop still, think it thru, and walk.

Great fun & really nice to do this, in lush weather, setting us up nicely for one of the most pleasant evenings of the year - a Sunday night back at The Swan (walking there via the relay area, as no longer out of bounds!), beers by the river & a meal. Stayed in cottage for 3rd night. What a great w/e! niec to have such a turnaround from individual debacle to relay jubilant celeb.s.

Orienteering race 1:38:00 [5] 10.0 km (9:48 / km) +400m 8:10 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

British O champs, High Dam, 8.1km, 405m

Picked up map & looked at no 1 & thought, how do i get there? lost a minute or so & considered this a success.

No 2 - long leg, so i navigated reasonably to an attack point 200m away from control miles up a hill, very steep, wooded, vague, almost no catching features. Tried to pace count - impossible. Tried to relocate - nothing made sense. went up - nothing - back down - nothing - up - nothing - then a wall! Down & across. Saw wall to the north. Lost. Jacked the whole race in, as had lost 10 mins already & had no plan A, B or C here. Out of my depth .

3 - no idea, but was in wrong altitude (See sunday afternoon). no 4 - walked in from AP beyond it - found another control - jacked that in too. no 5 & 6 - fine; Duncan H had caught me 13 mins & my race, over.

jogged / walked / peed / cut myself/ bathed cut in river/ had a drink, continued. Just enjoying my £28-worth now.

Eventually, no 9/10, Duncan & Clive got me, tried to stop Duncan blatantly following Clive but couldn't be arsed after about 5 controls, so dropped and jogged / got lost (!), couldn't really be bothered to move.

Whatever. Glad Clive won; glad Charlie got silver in Lakes.

Sport climbing at Wyndcliffe quarry, with Steve R. from my Kalymnos trip - he's climbed Ama Dablam, 6800m, and also was once a pro mountain guide, now aged 58 and gunning for hard sport.

8 routes (ouch!). up to 6b+, one of which i tried to onsight & failed (no worries
- Steve found it nails), the other, I'd done in 2012 (given 6c+ - no way), which i fell off at 2nd bolt then got straight back on and did - just ! well strenuous .

Blows away the stiff / sore DOMS from the Urban last night - not used to running at Matt Whipple & Duncan Birtwhistle pace, at my old age & creakiness! :)

I should add that UBOC did a really good job tonight, a very well put on event, and there was a lovely gesture for some of us; I went away with a card and some fabulous chocolates......!!

I've had a good relationship with UBOC for years now, mutually beneficial, but the latest crop really do seem like a special bunch, and it's appreciated, thanks UBOC!
6 PM

Orienteering race (Urban) 38:10 [5] 7.0 km (5:27 / km) +120m 5:01 / km
shoes: Saucony Guide 7

UBOC urban, stoke bishop. Blue 6.2km.

really going well, one or two minor errors, but nothing major.

no 26 was cancelled, but i read the map at no 23 (IDIOT!) as going straight from there to 27, and so missed 24 & 25 . it's my fault, but I can see why it happened, so DQ.

was 33:32 at no 23, 30 secs ahead of Owain Jones, but 3 mins down on Eddie Narbutt at this point. This is good, tho.

I was a close 5th - just behind Duncan & Matt W! - at no 23 - my time 33:32 there.

Then did Trail - O - good fun!

Running OK; not as fit/fast as I'd like , but i'm nearly there, and i was pretty good considering loss of winter training and 2 weeks off in Greece.

Went for pint with Clio straight after - so evening went from being a little disappointing, to very good indeed. (from a visuals-only point of view).

Back into my sad little box I retreat. Dear me.
