Orienteering race 32:37 [5]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

BOC M50 relay, BOK team, 1st place (as in 2014 - same team, same order).

4.9km / 165m

1) new compass. £55. 2) had to hire dibber in last 15 minutes available as COULD NOT FIND MINE WHY?????? (still not turned up as I write this) stop press I found it - what a wally).

Mark S. on leg one, had a solid run in 5th, but I was off too far behind Charlie (SYO) & Roger Thetford to have any realistic chance of catching either (3½ mins) (Dave Peel back 1st in 31:50)

Ran down SO (Simon Errington) quite early on, but had to pass him twice due to my slightly tougher (not longer!) gaffle. Struggling up gentle hills in park - so unfit? Knackered? Lazy?

Entered last bit of white forest and running reasonably again, unaware that Chas was also in there, thrashing about unable to find his control (which luckily wasn't mine.....!). Passed him here, unawares.

Out onto the open, and off we go - saw no one, ran hard, nailed all but the weird gully end control, got burned off on final gaffle due to being old, scared, careful & slow. Ran all the way up the hill to find a) Andy Monro in the commentary box stating that we were leading, b) Tim T's head sticking up in the handover area, saying "What have you done with Charlie?" Eh? What? Roger had already finished - good for him, after I mercilessly ran him down in 2014.

Clive stormed round in 30:20 (OMG!!) for the win - surprise! Tim had no chance of catching 100 seconds , as he had "inadequate" eyewear in his eyes..... SYO were 3rd behind DEE in the end.

Heel niggly, but WHATEVER. used ibuprofen gel, & pills, tape, and freeze spray before race: nothing (I hope!) was going to stop me. My new £55 compass was lovely. Hired dibber less so. Anyone found my dibber? ==> ignore this.

Orienteering race 1:13:52 [5]
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

BOC M50 Long, Brown Clee hill,

Course 8.9km / 240 climb

Started ok but stressing re. heel. no 1 fine . rough bearing towards no 2- realised halfway there I wasn't being careful enough - got to "circle" and just - lost 8 minutes, menatally retiring twice. see forthcoming garmin link. It's going to be ugly. And utterly, utterly pathetic / incompetent.
Carried on to no 3 - feeling completely dejected, but somehow, splits say I won this leg - very odd.

Crap at no 7 - too far down / to the right, but then things picked up as it got easier - passed (just!) Neil C at no 9, he seemed to be going strong tho, spiking his control as I faffed & lost 20 seconds at mine.

Achilles/ankle hurt on the road run to no 12, & I actually stopped still at the top - seriously disgruntled now. Again, ridiculously I won this leg!?!?!?!?

Pretty clean & vigorous running from there on in, used no 7 as attackpoitn for no 15 as I was terrified of that vague area; stupidly, tried to sprint past a runner who kept edging ahead, missed no 21 & fell heavily diving back to it - he STILL dibbed before me - ARGH! broke compass, cut both hands, and bashed right knee bloody. (note: this has transpired to be Richard Lecky-Thompson, a familiar name - but sadly he will now think of me as a moron with bad language).

Clean from then on in despite no compass. 2nd last control seemed a bit too far to the right, but a woman popped into it so I veered off... Clive not so lucky ..... I won this split by a long way as a result. (also my typical last minute acceleration).
7th, surprisingly - expected about 20th like in JK Sprint where I made a similar disaster on one leg.

Take out no 2 & I was 4th, which would've been great. shit shit SHIT.

garmin: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1149732... - no 2 possibly the mistake of the decade? Jeez.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Heel too sore for comfort :(

Saw GP. Requested ultrasound scan, as advised by new chiropodist, on the NHS - good news, it's free; bad news - could take up to 4 weeks, tho I charmed her into getting it possibly speeded up for me. X-ray was the same day, so a bit crestfallen.

MIddle aged solvent sportsmen's heels being of course a far higher priority over other citizens who may well have serious conditions that aren't self-inflicted......!

1st world prob- ..... you know the rest.

Running 22:00 [3] 2.8 mi (7:51 / mi) +50m 7:27 / mi
(injured) shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Jog / run with Brown clee map - park, some roads.

Sadly, heel not too happy - quite bad on occasions, but not all the time.

This kind of gives me the answer re. was Tuesday a good idea, tho, I feel.

Time to get the professionals in properly now.

I still say I start BOC long.

Cycling 1:15:00 [3] 11.0 mi (6:49 / mi) +130m 6:35 / mi
(injured)

Cycle up Avon gorge, shirehampton, where I had to stop after < 30 mins and buy coke & a twix, due to a hypo - had had a small (half) a diabetes pill with lunch, mustn't do this again, I go hypo if I exercise thereafter.

cycle up big hill to & round Clifton downs, to Clifton, did some shopping & flat business, then cycled home via other shops.

Thighs very tired / achey / heavy. No "zip". Slightly stiff hamstraings from last night's "speed session". Worrying diabetes stuff again - finding this hard to manage (Mark3 pls take note).

No serious soreness in heel/Achilles, so last night appears to have been oK, am hopeful for Bristol 10k on the road on 16th May now :)

Running race 19:37 [5] 5.0 km (3:55 / km) +25m 3:50 / km
(injured) shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

Aztec summer series race one. 5km.

Did this to pace friend Ange, who wanted 21:30. Sadly she had a bit of a chesty lurg, and was clearly suffering straight off.

jogged 1st km in 4:01, felt ridiculous, almost walking. Ange there. Then pace dropped horribly - into a cold wind up home straight. Ange clearly out of sorts & not on it at all. It was a lost cause, so off I ran, apologising, but running 4:30's wasn't my plan.

kms 3 & 4 both in 3:45, which felt a bit foolish, then started cutting through runners that my pride says I should beat, including a right finish funnel burn up - result, last km 3:36 - IDIOT FOOL.

19:37 (17:38 in February....), not sure how heel will be tomorrow, but it seemed acceptable during the "race", so I'll take it. If I suffer at BOC, then it's my own fault. Groan.

74th (!) out of 153. winning time 15:19. I was 5th Vet50 & would like to do well in series. Fastest lady 16:48.

Won beer in the raffle.

Pub on way home.

Sometimes it's good to turn out anyway - nice evening.
