Orienteering race 1:03:23 [4]
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

LOC Lakes w/e day 2 - Short Brown2, Holme Fell, 6.5km / 365m

Ankle strapped up too much? - mummified. Felt like a wooden brick instead of a foot. This was a good thing.

Jogged to no 1 & felt ok.

Still trundling like a clod hopping clog wearer to no 3, then got confused on the "no 4" "issue". (did a little 20 seconds pirouette here). Realised I was too hot, and too lazy for this to be going very well. Even went wrong direction from x-ing point to no 5. Oh dear.

no 6 suddenly I got into gear, and I was "on" - stopped at no 7 to remove helly, tie round middle, and then started catching earlier starters en masse - Pete Mali, Steve Dempsey, Paul Taylor, Nick L, and finally, SCRAPPY DOO. (at no 13 - where I followed him so badly I was pretty lost then tried to do distractions & succeeded in distracting myself to no 14! (too far north). (long leg). This is very lazy, bad and poor technique, and I felt a little ashamed of my effort, after such high quality training in the week before. Come ON, Phil!

Ankle was clearly not re-spraining, so took the opportunity to run the short techy legs under pressure at the "front" - Lucy Haines being passed - small slip at no 18 but otherwise I turned into the Helsington Barrows version of myself from here to ...... the last control, where I didn't see the small track up the slag heap & went round - losing 22 seconds to Paul and he nearly re-caught me!

Surprised to find not far behind Quentin & Charlie, despite my amateurish start, but looking at splits, Q made a right cock up at no 22 and Charlie was far from clean too. Overall, a really good end to my 10 day orienteering odyssey, and I am finally, after some 24 years (JK 1992?), again a fan of the Lake District for orienteering.

Orienteering race 36:53 [5] 3.0 mi (12:18 / mi) +133m 10:48 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

LOC Middle Brown, Tarn hows. 4.1km / lots of climb allegedly

Reasonable start despite appalling wet weather. Mudbath - tracks all the way a hindrance - as quagmire.

Poor execution / decision on no 6 (long leg); very fast from there to no 11 where the contours were plain WRONG. - 30 secs.

Achilles started hurting up hill to 14, but then coming out, went over properly on LH ankle badly - agony - proper sprain - man down, yelping in pain. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got up, hobbled, managed to cobble together some sort of "running action" and determined to finish and have " a good run".

I did 36:53 but for some unfathomable reason, I decided to re-punch finish SI approx. 17 seconds after finished "to make sure it had registered". Never again. That overwrites the other finish dib. No change in position but I was 1 second behind Sarah Jones at the last control; her run in was 18 seconds so no chance there.

Very surprised how far down I was on Quentin, Charlie & Tim; I'm clearly shit at sprint & middle races. Yet I dislike long legs. OK. Wrong sport? Take up national 5km road races for over 50s?

Walk back in pain from finish to car in driving cold rain with ankle screaming & swelling was possibly the most unpleasant 15 minutes of the year.

Swollen ankle - RICE at bunkhouse - very very painful for 2 hours then eased enough to get to pub. Thankfully.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 8.0 km (15:00 / km) +300m 12:38 / km
shoes: Mud Claw 333

O Training - Blakeholme plantation. Oh wow!

Nice weather & amazing terrain / map. Shadowed Ruby Owen. Did Norwegian map memory. Did long legs. Did map drawn in 2 minutes after 2 pints of bitter the night before (this went surprisingly well!)

Very, very tired - jogging, then walking. Another mini-bonk / mini hypo. Worrying - for OMM too if Mark3 is reading - Achilles also a worry / pain. Tried to eat & rest up. Juniors still at it hammer & tongs - HOW??? Woes dispelled by incredible views from Gummer How (?) - over Windermere. Also great trip to Booths where we walked around In muddy O kit & bought comfort food & drink. Happy days.

Died after supper & had to nap. Actually fell asleep on bunk bed and no chance for pub or booze this time. Can I cope?

O training, Greythwaite. Weather OK, not great - cold when sun not out.

Achilles hurting on walk in - using walking stick. Trying to adopt a positive mental attitude about it.
Shadowed Guy Owen. Did long legs, contour, control pick.

Moved to new base. Shadowed young Dylan.

Tried long legs - bonked. Also could not find no 2. Gave up.

Needed a feed & tea & coffee from concerned people as my bonk was quite hypo-ey. Recovered enough to go out & fetch no 1 & 2 - finding it this time!

Staggered out - wet & cold. Recovered later for Drinken Duck pub. With Paul & Matthew. First came here July 1985 post finals. How did I get so old?

shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Jk relay, 4.3k, ? climb, went off 2nd caught FVO Jon Cross 25secs at no 1, but conscience got the better of me in the urban bit & took my own route round the buildings which led to steps not on map! He was away, never saw him again. Held it 2gether for rest of race, but v tired. Cljve had no chance against Marcus P anyway.... 2nd place; terrific run from geoff ellis on leg 1.

great JK, v happy to get on podium , tired battered, hobbling on my achilles but all good except for friday, a very sad day.
