8x short hill sprints (down 30 yd, back up).

So much for the "rest day".

Cat kept me awake again.

orienteering 1:10:00 [2] **
shoes: Integrator

AM - Clinton SP trails. Is this really the first time to this park to run since the New Year's Day race? Emphasis on road workouts for a marathon, dislike for chiggers and all the injuries made it easy to stay away. Well, day 2 of recovery I probably overdid the distance and the effort as it was at tempo the last 2 miles. The hills we climb on this trail would please Red Dog with his penchant to include some climbing (stairs, hills, or whatever) in about every other workout. Drank a lot of water and tried a Clif Shot gel at 35 min.
Took a map, but the concentration was terrible. Got more out of the mapreading on the return leg.
Turn around was the stream before crossing over the the south side peninsula.

New injury to come? I feel a pinch in the bottom of my right foot every now and then. Another form of plantar fasciitis?

orienteering race 19:50 [3] **
9c slept:10.0 shoes: Salomon

PTOC Sprint O at Bonner Park, KC, KS. Mary Jones set the course. DOubtful the night before whether I could handle the first run in about a week with the flu. No chest pains like last Sat. Steady pace throughout and ready to slow do if any problems. Just glad to be out orienteering again and chatting with running friends.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Took day off from work - felt much better overall, but still slow. Medical reference guide says I'll get better in the next three days, but will still be tired and worn out.

Monday Jul 24, 2006 #

Note
(sick)

flu - came home from work at 12 noon; slept most of afternoon. Tried to eat dinner, then had ice cream - bad idea. Got chills and uncontrollable shakes, before sweating in bed later.

Sunday Jul 23, 2006 #

Note
(sick)

AM - worked Lone Star Lake triathlon as volunteer on running portion (with Dee). Definitely not feeling well, and the hot sun seemed to help.
PM - slept the afternoon

Saturday Jul 22, 2006 #

running/walking 22:00 [1]
(sick)

AM - went to Lied Center parking lot for RDDD #8. Chest pains running downhill in Union parking garage. Had to walk on Jayhawk Blvd.
PM - slept and had to watch which side I slept on to avoid chest/back pain. I've got the flu.

Friday Jul 21, 2006 #

biking (road bike) 41:00 [2]
shoes: Shimano (bike)

5:45 AM - took reflectors for bike, turned around earlier (just Langston Hughes School most direct route and back). Storm brewing - wind changed to gust from NW, temp dropped 78 to 73 in 40 min. Rained hard after I got back.

strength/stretching 25:00 [1]
shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - RDDD#7 - stretching & fast pace thru calisthenics

running/walking intervals 25:00 [3]

biking (road bike) 20:00 [1]
shoes: Shimano (bike)

Commute to work - easy up Lawrence Ave. Nice breeze this morning to cool things off (expected 102 later in the day. . .)

Wednesday Jul 19, 2006 #

strength/stretching 25:00 [1]

AM - RDDD#6 stretching exercises for calf and hamstring and Red Dog's calisthenics. Today it was the 30-sec (& 60-sec) tests (e.g., do as many situps in 60 sec). Came close to skipping the workout today. . .

running/walking hills 15:00 [3]
shoes: Asics GT2100

then - 800m, 1x stadium steps, 800m, 2xbleacher climbs (halfway up), 800m. The climbing was good, caution to watch my balance coming down. Balance seems to be OK. Just the usual wooziness from a hard workout.

Monday Jul 17, 2006 #

strength/stretching 25:00 [1]
shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - RDDD#5 - stretching for 10 min, then calisthenics for 15. Football team was using stadium so the Dog Days people worked out on the grass and parking lot.

running/walking 15:00 [2]

Around stadium sidewalks, then up to JRP, down by Potter's Lake dam, then one more tiem around stadium.

Sunday Jul 16, 2006 #

biking (road bike) 1:37:00 [2]
shoes: Shimano (bike)

AM - rode to Clinton SP - including all the campground loops (i.e, staying on top avoiding one extra climb). Got dizzy after putting effort going up hills leaving the park - not vertigo dizzy - lightheaded and had to stop. I hope it's because of lack of sleep.
Found out that Keith Dowell, another M50 road runner, also had BPPV, so the old geezers are just getting loose rocks in their heads. . .

running/walking warm up/down 10:00 [1]

running/walking race (XC race) 15:16 [4] 2.0 mi (7:38 / mi)
shoes: Integrator

Eudora HS - Horsethief XC 2 mile. Intent was to finish 2 miles without hamstirng problems. Did stretching beforehand. The fast old guys ran the 4 mile race (or were working the race), so they gave me top masters male.

running/walking 18:00 [1]
shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - after dropping off digital clock and finish line stuff at home, drove truck over to Damon's apt and jogged home. Sunny and hot - being off a few weeks you sure notice the lack of acclimating to the heat.

Friday Jul 14, 2006 #

biking (road bike) 1:00:00 [2]
slept:7.0 shoes: Shimano (bike)

AM - up Lawrence Ave then thru Alvamar to YSI fields; back via 6th, & Fall Creek. 68F (rained last night).

Thursday Jul 13, 2006 #

biking (road bike) 47:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon

AM - out to Grand Vista then to Peterson and over to Langston Hughes School, back via Harvard. 70F, humid.

Wednesday Jul 12, 2006 #

strength/stretching 25:00 [1]
shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - RDDD #4 - got to the stadium parking lot early (stadium was closed for a track meet today), did some stretching, then Red Dog's calisthenics - 11X on various exercises, then repeating 22X. There are still a lot of people, more so than past years.

running/walking hills 16:00 [3]
shoes: Asics GT2100

cont AM workout with zigzag run from stadium lot to 10th over to Tennessee, to
11th up and down, Tenn, then
up/down 12th & Tenn,
up/dpwn 13th & Tenn, then up 14th (at top I had to walk, pretty hard for first workout after almost a month layoff from running), then back to stadium parking lot. Ran uphill with good effort, took it easy going down - did not want to risk hamstring injury.

Tuesday Jul 11, 2006 #

running/walking 16:00 [1]
shoes: Asics GT2100

PM - RDDD #3 for the summer. Went to the stadium to do some stretching. It was photo day for Dog Days, so only did some running (800m on track, up the hill to Spencer Library and down, then 800m). Took it easy going downhill to avoid stressing the hamstring. In the morning got the OK from the physical therapist that the BPPV is over and can resume working out again.

Monday Jul 10, 2006 #

biking (exercise bike) 27:00 [2]
shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - slept on my right side contrary to my physical therapist's recommendation to sleep on the left side. Felt rested and NOT dizzy this morning, so went to the SRFC and rode the exercise bike, then did 2 sets of chin ups (hadn't lost what strength I had 2 weeks ago). Leg muscles tired in evening.
Homer (our dog) is missing (gate left open). Dee & I combed the neighborhood (walk, bike, car) - so another 30 min exercise. . . Will get classified ad out tomorrow.

Sunday Jul 9, 2006 #

running/walking 40:00 [2]
shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - test run - left calf and right hamstring were OK until end of run. Out Peterson to Monterey, returned via Riverview Rd.

Tuesday Jul 4, 2006 #

running/walking 38:00 [2]
(sick) shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - is a mild case of vertigo a sickness? Anyway, can't just sit around the house, so had to try a run to Monterey & Peterson. The run was OK, no leg problems or dizziness just bloated from a toast and ceral breakfast. At 33 min, the hamstring felt like it could go, so I let up and walked for awhile then jogging easy the last 200m to home. First PT Friday; what will they do for me?
.. now back to Belgium and the Tour on the tube...

strength/stretching 15:00 [1]

Before run, easy Dog Days exercises and some new Runners World stretches. Doing the quad stretch, got really dizzy. The BPPV is not over!

Sunday Jul 2, 2006 #

running/walking warm up/down 15:00 [1]
(rest day) shoes: Salomon

PM - 96F - The Brandt-Daroff exercises did not produce any nausea this morning, so I decided to go for any easy walk/jog around the neighborhood. Legs, hamstring OK; no dizziness. Just tired, blah tired - sitting too long watching the Tour this morning. . . and most of yesterday. Not being able to exercise is numbing. . .
