running/walking 34:00 [3]

PM - left work early - ran to Fall Creek (saw 2 deer). Danny Manning's mansion is huge - tall rooms on the first floor. Then went to 1st half of KU soccer game (1-0 over OSU at half time). Left early - too cold.

biking (road bike) 1:30:00 [1]

6:15 pm - bike club illuminated bike ride - starts at Hollywood Theaters, on bike path to end (about 18 mi). Niterider light worked fine. Not as bright as I thought (on a bike, but does great for night O). Could use another lamp on helmet.
Fell at Clinton Pkwy T (W end of pkwy) when trying to fine curb cut. Missed and lost balance while forgetting how to get out of pedals.
Chilly, could have used ski gloves instead of bike gloves.

Rest day.
Beautiful fall day, sunny. Looked out the window all morning and early afternoon; finally decided to take a nap. Then watched Chiefs go 8-0.

running/walking 10:00 [1]

AM - warmup

orienteering 49:15 [4] 5.8 km (8:29 / km)
spiked:0/11c

AM - Fleming Park (Lake Jacomo) - goal to was run relaxed and minimize errors. Still trying to get over a nagging cold. Streams on map were very dark - black to my eyes. Map was hard to read. Pleased with the run.

orienteering (night O) 48:00 [4] 7.0 km (6:51 / km)
31c

PM - Night score-O at Fleming Park (SW corner of Lake Jacomo). Pretty good run, but missed a control. The O' was easy, keeping track of 32 controls wasn't - forgot one - so found 31 of 32 in 48 min. Time limit was 1 hr. Couldn't find battery holder/vest, so used a fanny pack - worked OK.
Map was not one of Dick Luckerman's best - issues with IOF standards. But was perfectly fine for the night O - mostly on mowed grass, in-and-out of thick woods.

Keith Lay & I were the first 2 to head south to the lone control at that end, most of the rest went north. About 7 km - my distance.

One of the houses has a full court basketball court in back (Danny Manning's house?).

orienteering 1:11:00 [1]

PM - Clinton Lake = ran/walk fielchecking park.
Saw about 6 turkeys basking in the sun, a deer, and bluebirds. State trooper asked what I was doing as I went into closed off areas of the park. Nice sunny fall day.
Listened to the Chiefs game to and back from park. Amazing comeback.

running/walking 15:00 [1]

warmup

running/walking 30:14 [5] 4.0 mi (7:34 / mi)

Run for Success 4 miler. Race started at 4pm (usual around here). Made a point not to keep up with Dick Wilson (age 70 local runner who won on the age-graded competition). Two African runners showed up (prize money). About 110 people ran. Pleased with effort and time. Averaged 9 min slower during training runs. Heavy-breathing like in hs xc races.

running/walking 44:00 [3]

PM - Clinton SP - 4:36 warmup - 4 mi in 39:17. No map, but tried to estimate 100m or 150m pace counting. Worse was off about 30m, only once right on 100m.
Saw 2 deer.

Tuesday Oct 7, 2003 #

Octoginta - did the whole 80 - mostly with Danny Caplan. sunny, winds from SW - beautiful day. Big crowd at breakfast stop (Sunflower's sag stop). Grover was on the ride, too. Finished in good form - tired but not cramping up. The younger riders go so fast! Also the the older guys with the gray hair also go so fast!

Al Hicklin came up from Texas. Danny is planning a bike tour with his wife in Thailand.
