orienteering (night O) 1:01:00 [4]
7c

Shawnee Mission Park - night O. Mary set an interesting course; Spike, Nadim and I ran. 35F. Didn't do enough map reading on easy first 3 legs, got sloppy on last 3. Smart thing would have been to stay in the open as much as possible.

Sunday Jan 26, 2003 #

running/walking 1:58:00 [2]

RockCrusher trails w/Spike. Brought along a map but did little reading. 16 F, cloudy. Staying on the trails in the woods and avoided getting too close to the shoreline helped against the N wind.

running/walking 15:00 [1]

warmup

orienteering 1:08:59 [5] 7.8 km (8:51 / km)
spiked:3/17c

Longview O - Red course. A lot of open running in grassy fields; no major booms - got lucky around several controls; got confused with crossing legs again. E.g., 14 to 10 instead of 15. #11 may have been misplaced or map not quite right. About 25 F, sunny.

Note

Wore neoprene socks again - (1) good to keep warm and (2) stick tights are easier to remove.

running/walking 2:20:00 [3] 14.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

to Clinton Pkwy-T via CCCC & Legends Trail. Returned via Wakarusa, Carmel. Longer run than planned, definitely more than I wanted to do. Walk (& Gatorade) breaks every 20 min; more last 40 min. About 38 degrees, sunny, wind from east, mostly clear pavement - nothing icy. Adductor muscles sore from skiing Sat. After run, right ankle tender again.

skiing &other (xc ski) 1:02:00 [3]

AM - Drove to Clinton SP - slid off the road, but got help to push car back on. No much snow cover left there, so went to YSI fields and skiied from there to Rock Bottom map area (east end & Mutt Run). Slopped around going out, got some gliding. Using old wood Bonna skis since Kastles broke last season on the Clinton SP rocks. About 28 degrees - cloudy then sunny.

running/walking 5:00 [1]

warmup

orienteering 1:05:55 [5] 7.7 km (8:34 / km)
spiked:3/13c

Kill Creek Park - new map!
Turned off trail to #1 too soon.
#2 mucked around 20 sec too long at the control.
#4 - lost concentration - pace counted but didn't react to how poor mapped the depressions were - should have recognized limestone outcrops are never on top, but on the drop of (contours line close together).
Water on trail between 5-6 was too far south from recommended stream crossing.
Other controls OK.
About 28 degrees, sunny.

orienteering 20:00 [1]

warm down w/map

Thursday Jan 9, 2003 #

running/walking 48:00 [2]

PM - from house to Lawr Auto Diagn. in the dark - had to slow down at a couple of dark woody areas, but mostly streets.

Wednesday Jan 8, 2003 #

running/walking 38:00 [3]

AM - Monterey & Trail (about 40 degrees) - had a little zip in the legs after so many days of rest. . .

Sunday Jan 5, 2003 #

biking (road bike) 52:00 [1]

PM - Lakeview+ still sore & tired from yesterday's O run. 45 degrees, sunny - had to convince myself it would be good to work out (it will eventually get cold, so hate to waste these good days).

orienteering 1:12:39 [4] 6.4 km (11:21 / km)

AM - Rock Haven - ran course from KUROTC Region 3 Area Champs (Mar 6, 82). Trails still relatively the same. Woods are not white, but not really that bad - of course stick tights and wooly-mammoth type burrs. About 30 degrees, sunny, dry. Not a 5-effort - spent more time around control locations.
Saw 2 deer. Area could be good for training - area is meant for trail riders.
