orienteering (fieldchecking) 2:30:00 [1]

AM - got to Randolph SP about 10:30, fieldchecked from car and road for 30 min. Then ran/walked north-most trail adjusting map (trails drawn by Flint Hills Harriers weren't bad, but neede adjustments to match contours). Short lunch break, then checked B to D trail (4.5 mi) til 2 pm. Mostly walk and run. Had to add a lot of little switchbacks. Nice area - trails are less rocky than Clinton SP. Should have brought water along for last 2 hours.
67 degrees at 2 pm!

3:36 to #1
5:04
5:58
8:22
13:54 (went straight to field, then down; on trail would have been better).
20:06 (read the map to avoid boom!)
6:40 to finish
last place again! not fun.

orienteering 1:33:28 [5] 9.2 km (10:10 / km)

Tall Oaks Meet, blue course - major boom day. must apologize for the swearing I did on the course (doesn't make for a pleasant run for others). Goal was to do a good run, not worry about running speed and avoid big mistakes. Big mistake after big mistake and to top it off, running into a barbed wire fence and getting ripped up - did get a tetanus shot. Found out I had a temp of 100.3
The market has bottomed out and we're on the road to a slow recovery...

AM - 30pu35su10dip25pu

orienteering (night O) 1:12:55 [4]

PM: Night O - SM Park - started from Streamways Park. 3.9 km course. 5 controls (5th missing - spent 31 min searching). ET to pt 4 = 41:57. Blew past #1. Used 2 flashlight-strength headlamps and wore contacts - had to ask Keith Layton how to leave the parking lot - my eyes couldn't make sense of the start. Should warm up and let eyes adjust to darkness next time. Temp about 45 - great weather.

strength/stretching 34:00 [2]

noon: BFC - weights; last 10 min on rowing machine (1500m - went out too fast at first - so what's new?).

Sunday Jan 6, 2002 #

orienteering 1:01:40 [5] 8.4 km (7:20 / km)

James A Reed Wildlife Area (Lee's Summit) long course (8.4 km) Dan Meenehan set course on a Mo Conservation Commission map (no contours). Good challenge to read map, interpret what was supposed to where.
#3 - should have trusted my pace counting, kept track of where I was on E side of Gopher Lake, but quit reading at the N end (running too hard?). Lost 3-5 min?

running/walking 30:00 [1]

marker pickup ("auto-intervals") - Dan drove me to spot on road nearest marker, then ran in to pickup. Ankles sore from overuse (probably from squat lifts in weight room).

Saturday Jan 5, 2002 #

orienteering 52:00 [3]

AM - 1 loop of SMP TT course - easy with Dan,
then reran 1st night-O course with new O markers set out by Spike. 30 min, better than 53 the first time but still bungled #1.
