running/walking (walking) 35:00 [1] 1.25 mi (28:00 / mi)

Dog Days - stretching and 1.25 mi walk with Don Cackler

running/walking (walking) 42:00 [2] 3.0 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Hoka One One

Mad Dogs annual John Bunce Run. I predicted 43 min for the 3 mile course. Came in a minute fast. Race-walked some and knew I had to stroll in since only one 4 miler runner ran passed me within 3 blocks of the finish. Winner came within 1 sec.

Then walked over to Horejsi to catch the end of the KU vs TCU volleyball game. Dee had gotten free tickets today. Caught the last 5 KU points before they won 3-0.

strength/stretching (Dog Days) 40:00 [1] 0.5 mi (1:19:58 / mi)
slept:4.0

Didn't get much sleep last night. Groggy at Dog Days, so did the workout without much effort, then about 4 laps easy walk chatting with Rich Freeman about his experience with pacemakers.

Rained in the morning so didn't go to Dog Days. Lunch (ROMEO group) with old Union colleagues at El Pueblo.

3 PM

running/walking (walking) 1:11:00 [2] 4.5 mi (15:47 / mi)

Recovery walk from house to Lawrence Auto Diagnostic to pick up the truck. Probably walked too far for a recovery, but OK.
When I got home, Damon needed a ride to ATSI to pick up his car. Then driving home from east Lawrence, truck overheated and had to call a tow truck to drop it off back at LAD. This truck is too old, but someone still doesn't want to get rid of it.

8 AM

strength/stretching warm up/down 10:00 [1]
slept:7.0

dyhnamic stretching and before that walking around taking photos of the preceding 10K race (2 laps around roads at Forbes Field).
10 AM

running/walking (walking) 31:11 [3] 5.0 km (6:14 / km)
shoes: Hoka One One

Kansas Senior Games 5K - since doctor's order is for no running for 2-3 months, I race walked the 5K. After only one week of attempting to race walk and Googled how-to, managed to do a 31:11 today. Not sure if a couple of times I came close to "running", but my mantra was "no running". Have to avoid damaging the connecting wires in the heart.
Very pleased with the effort and the time. I was hoping to break 40 min given the pace on my training walks. Should get together with Alan Poisner to learn what is the right technique and when it becomes grounds for disqualification for running. Ended up 2nd in M65. Very small attendance - less than 25 people both the 5K ands 10K. Many did both races.

orienteering 27:35 [2] 2.0 mi (13:47 / mi)
slept:7.5 shoes: Salomon XT Wings 3

PTOC Antioch park O. walked the sprint 1 course (2.7K) - some race walking but just a tad slower.
Then went to Penn Valley Park ro see Damon do some aerial bike riding, then lunch with him at La Bodega (paella was OK). Then PTs Coffee before heading home.

strength/stretching (Dog Days) 23:00 [1]

Red Dog led the workout and I was able to do more exercises that didn't strain the area around the left shoulder and heart. Planls, dog legs, Gary exercise on the knees, crunches, mountain climbs are OK. Pushups and arm twists, any jumping - no.

running/walking (walking) 27:00 [2] 2.34 mi (11:32 / mi)
shoes: Hoka One One

Tried to race walk from Central MS track - 14th, Mass, 15th, Burroughs Trail, 11th and back to Mass, 14th and track. I know racewalking form was bad at points and too close to running. I must not run for another 1-2 months. Concentrated on what little I know of proper walking form. Plan to walk the Senior Games 5K on Sunday in Topeka; I was already signed up for the 10K run and can "earn" my souvenir shirt.

I couldn't crack 13 min/mile the first time I race walked, so I must have been cheating today if the pace was under 12 min/mile.

strength/stretching (Dog Days) 20:00 [1]
slept:7.5

First Dog Days workout dealing with limited movement with my left arm and pacemaker. Surprisingly, Kenny Baldwin led the workout and most of the drills I could do, or do with modifications - like jumping jacks done without hopping off the ground and lifting the left arm no more than shoulder high.
Then did my own walking afterwards.

running/walking (walking) 35:00 [2] 2.25 mi (15:33 / mi)

walked around Central MS track and around neighborhood to get in 2.25 miles. Easy pace and a few times race walking, but mostly easy. Hips sore from yesterday's race walking.

Monday Sep 18, 2017 #

running/walking (walking) 30:00 [2] 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pureflow 5

walked in neighborhood north of Peterson. Tried to do race walking (13-14 min/mi). At the end, stopped to check my heart rate (~120 bmp). No issues. Different muscles for fast walking, so may be sore tomorrow.

Sunday Sep 17, 2017 #

1 PM

running/walking (walking) 1:13:20 [2] 4.5 mi (16:18 / mi)
shoes: Hoka One One

walk from home to Burcham Park, then stopped in the public library. Then to 8th & Vermont, Old West Lawrence, thru Pinckney school grounds, 4th & Iowa and home.
Earlier in the day (about 10 am) shopped at Dillons and chatted with a friend and then got a little dizzy. I thought maybe I had interference with my pacemaker. Walked back to car slowly. On drive home, figured my sugar level was low. Heated up leftovers and felt better.

Note
(rest day)

Photographed the Dr. Bob XC 5K at Rim Rock Farm. No running, so that was a creativity challenge to stay within walking distance between photo op locations.

Friday Sep 15, 2017 #

9 AM

running/walking (walking) 35:40 [2] 2.1 mi (16:59 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pureflow 5

from house thru Hallmark parking lot, then to Burcham Park to river's edge and back to LMH-cardio. Readjusted settings on pacemaker.
Couldn't sleep because of throbbing in left side below the heart - pacemaker setting off and overstimulated the left ventricle. Reduced throbbing if I lay on my back but curled up slightly to the left (reducing the stretch across the heart). Jennifer Haynes at LMH made the adjustments (a former chem student of Grover Everett and friends of Celeste L and Laurie Comstock).
12 PM

running/walking (walking) 20:20 [3] 1.2 mi (16:57 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pureflow 5

Then walked back home via Princeton and Kingston.

Thursday Sep 14, 2017 #

9 AM

running/walking (walking) 38:00 [1] 2.2 mi (17:16 / mi)
shoes: Hoka One One

Walked from home to LMH for a checkup on my pacemaker. After exam, walked home. Temp: 65F, nice.
Got the go ahead so I can drive a car again. Still have to wait a few more weeks before I can run.

8 AM

running/walking (walking) 12:45 [1] 0.59 mi (21:36 / mi)
(injured) shoes: Brooks Pureflow 5

walk around the block - left shoulder stiff and sore while walking. Had to get out of the house. Nice morning. Walking to Dillons and back (3 mi) may still be too much today.
Now I am a bionic Mad Dog like Grover Everett, Dick Lipsey and Ed Payne among other runners with pacemakers - part human ,part machine.
5 PM

running/walking (walking) 14:00 [1] 0.72 mi (19:26 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pureflow 5

KU football game wasn't looking so good, so I went for a 2 block walk : Westchester, Yorkshire, Princeton, Kingston.
Gentle walk, kept heart rate low.

Thursday Sep 7, 2017 #

running/walking (walking) 30:00 [1]
(rest day)

Had to wait for doctor to finish his morning operation before I had a chance to learn what I got and what I need to do to take care of myself the next week. Then 2 more tests (CT scan and an ultrasound of the arteries in the neck) - both results OK.
Pace counting steps in my room and got in a 800m walk. Easy.
Didn't get to leave until about 5:30 pm; Damon picked me up. Glad to get back home.
