shoes: Salomon

7:45 AM - Dog Days #9 - in the rain, easy run with Cackler from Lied Center to Kasold & back.

shoes: Asics Gel-Cumulus

at evening SUmemr Sizzler at JCCC

running/walking race 22:32 [5] 5.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel-Cumulus

9 PM - Summer Sizzler 5K at JCCC - just wanted to do an evening race for a change. Warming up felt sluggish and had concerns with right hamstring. At turnaround point, the hamstring was acting up and had to ease up on the pace on any slight downhill (this was a flat course). Finished the race but didn't have the enjoyable run I was hoping for.
Fritz ran the 10 mile trail race at Landahl (ran with an old O'map), drove back to Topeka, then came back to KC for the evening run. He's getting his training miles. . .

Iced hamstring when I got home and again next morning.

Fritz reminded me not to over train - allow for rest days. Doing a yogilates & Dog Days series under a 12 hour period, twice a week, admittedly now is too much. Maybe another year without the coveted DD shirt.

Saturday Jun 23, 2007 #

running/walking (trail race) 59:10 [5] 6.5 mi (9:06 / mi)

Vasque Summer Intro "10K" Trail Run. At Shawnee Mission Park - on the new trail network NW of tennis courts. A lot of packed dirt paths - smaller percentage of rocky sections than old trails. A little muddy after overnight rain. Was going to run in my Salomons, but opted for studded shoes.

Monday Jun 18, 2007 #

strength/stretching (Yogiltes) 55:00 [1]

PM - Yogilates - a lot of work on the back - have to be careful; also hamstring work - had to back out of a few to avoid pulling a muscle.

Sunday Jun 17, 2007 #

biking (road bike) 57:00 [2]
shoes: Shimano (bike)

AM - slept late (actually got up at 5 am to get the cat fed and put outside in his cage - don't like our cat at night), read the Sunday paper and more Willa Cather, then took another 1.5 hr nap. Out at 10 am - rode out N Kasold to check on paving project, then up Grand Vista & Monterey and on to Langston Hughes School. Found the new paved trails (not completely done, possible area for new sprint-O and 5K races; saw a huge turkey right next to the trail - 10 ft of me), then home.

running/walking warm up/down 15:00 [1]

running/walking race 28:42 [5] 5.0 km (5:44 / km) +300m 4:25 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Salomon

Sanctuary of Hope 5K Challenge Run - advertised as 1000 ft of uphills. Certainly walked all the steep uphills - very similar to hills on O' courses - which I never run up anyway. 2nd in M55.

running/walking race 25:57 [5] 3.5 mi (7:25 / mi)
shoes: Salomon

After a 30 min rest (& some lemonade) back on the flatter 5K Race. Finished 3rd in M55. Paced behind Marla Rhoden the whole way (the challenge course was harder on her as she's always faster in any road race). It was called "Do the Double" - was able to take 1st among the fools who did both.
Advertised as a 5K, but many people with GPS complained and said it was 3.5 mi. Fritz was at the races and took 4th in both races. . . he could have medaled or won if he had raced in any younger age category.

strength/stretching 25:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel-Cumulus

AM - Dog Days #4 - calisthenics - the 30 sec drills led by Kenny. Some stretching on my own for 10 min at first. Bent arm plank core exercises have been added this year.

running/walking 1:02:00 [2]
shoes: Asics Gel-Cumulus

AM - ran from house to stadium - very tired from lack of sleep; then around campus, before heading home.

Wednesday Jun 13, 2007 #

PM - yogilates - used exercise ball for most of the workout.

Tuesday Jun 12, 2007 #

strength/stretching 20:00 [1]
shoes: New Balance 767

Dog Days #3 - the jogging to warmup felt good and took it easy in doing the exercises.

running/walking 20:00 [1]

AM - drove to Dog Days not knowing how leg/hamstring would do today. 800m warmup, then did the exercises, 5 laps (2 K) and 2X stadium seats (1/2 way up - walked).

Monday Jun 11, 2007 #

Note
(rest day)

Iced back side of left knee and skipped yogilates this evening. Felt fine after run on Sat, but leg was stiff and tight all day.

Sunday Jun 10, 2007 #

Note

Dee & went to see the new Bloch addition to the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery in KC. Walked around for about 3 hours. Certain that contributed to the sore muscles on Mon, June 11.
Again, no lunch finding an open Ethiopian restaurant for Dee, so we ended up at Aladdin Cafe (same owner who has a place in Lawrence) - the food was good (mint in the felafels).

running/walking warm up/down 10:00 [1]

running/walking race 1:40:43 [4] 10.0 mi (10:04 / mi)
shoes: Integrator

AM - Rock Creek Trail Series - 10 Mile. Seemed tired and groggy at start probably from lack of sleep this week. TRails were nice and what I expected. 1st 5 went north along the rockier trails; 2 nd 5 did the south loops most of the tracks fast and smooth. Couldn't see clearly (eyes could not focus) and felt light headed (dizzy) as early as mile 2. By mile 3 wondered if I could even finish & thought about abandoning at 5 miles. Slowing down seemd to clear this dizziness. Had to look carefully to avoid the rocks and stumps. Kept pace with Bad Ben Holmes to mile 3, but the goal became "run to finish". Exhaustionwise felt great at the end. The blurriness was annoying and did not enjoy any of the scenery. Tree-cover is great for running in the Kansas summer. Recommend this event and trails to anyone. Won a nice set of sunglasses (I'll trade since they're not prescription) and a year's subscription to TrailRunner.

strength/stretching 30:00 [1]

After run at home did Jones stretches and clipped shrubbery.

running/walking 40:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 767

AM - Ran to Dog Days (#2), checked in, then took photos of the workout. Didn't use a high enough ISO setting so everything was blurrier than expected. So, no calisthenics today, but that's OK since I'm still sore from last night's yogilates.

Wednesday Jun 6, 2007 #

strength/stretching 55:00 [1]

PM - Yogilates. This stuff is hard if one is quite inflexible. Will not put any strain on the back. . .

Tuesday Jun 5, 2007 #

running/walking 38:00 [2]
shoes: New Balance 767

AM - run to KU stadium, 19 out, 19 back. Easy, then almost at tempo; steady/easy on way back after Dog Days.

strength/stretching 30:00 [1]

AM- Dog Days #1 - I'm counting days again until I get my shirt (I NEED another one - start the second set of a thousand. . . : )
Entire football field filled with participants, some of us stood on the track (not as damp - us ol' timers know that). Asked to sign waivers this year and we had an emergency on day one - some guy fell. About 5 medical types were on the spot.

Red Dog, the ex-Marine, said this is not boot camp. Besides, people in New York (& Lawrence KS) pay to do boot camps; this is free.

Monday Jun 4, 2007 #

strength/stretching 55:00 [1]

PM - Yogilates at Community Vldg - start of twice a week evening workouts for the summer. The yoga part was familiar and comfortbale; the Pilates I'll need to get used to.

Saturday Jun 2, 2007 #

running/walking 50:00 [1] 4.5 mi (11:07 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 767

Hospital Hill - took pictures at the 5K start (1.5 mi mark for the half marathon course), then ran with Dee to the 10K/13.1M split; took more photos at the Plaza, before running/walking with Dee (at the 10 mi mark). Dee was in trouble with cramps in both calves. Very painful for her, stopping to walk, hanging on to my arm, shoulder or fanny pack. Reminiscent of my cramping troubles in so many Possum Trots - my first advice was to don't worry about finishing since the cramping would only get worse to a point of pure agony. She made it to the 12.9 mi point before the cramp seized up and - pure agony. I held her while writhing nad asked to be laid down as a paramedic came by to help, an ambulance called, and an MD who has just finished his run came over to help. The medic bent the leg to shorten the muscle length and to be still and breath. Dee refused the ambulance and was determined to finish the race (she has a lot of Grand Prix race points at stake - a yearlong point competition). She survived and didn;t have any trouble on the drive home. Can't fugure out what caused the problem.
New shoes? Yes, but already broken in in 4 races over two weeks.
Hydrated? Yes, even drank uo last night.
Too many races in 2 weeks (3)? Perhaps
Had a deep message at Monday's race? Massage felt fine on Monday. . .
Recommendations: Two friends suggested taking a pill called Succeed. Anyone know about this?
