running/walking warm up/down 10:00 [1]

orienteering race 1:36:48 [5] *** 5.74 km (16:52 / km) +205m 14:19 / km
11c slept:7.0 (sick) shoes: VJ Falcon

Weston Bend Meet.
Falcon shoes, soles rehot glued - stayed intact for race (one good thing today)...
Night before terrible itching, took Zertec and stayed up past midnight, so didn't get much sleep. Dropped Dee off for vanpool to her race in KC (at 6 am). Went back to bed and slept to about 8 am. Had a large breakfast of leftover macaroni and ground turkey, tomato sauce (from evening before) - so thought I was fueled up.
Terrrain was rough (steep, brambly) and orienteering was not sharp. Felt tired before the start, like on many past two-day events, so I thought I could do the course today. But, really bonked leaving #4 - had to walk and felt dizzy enough to just stop. After leaving 5 (after Mike E. caught me), thought was to return to the start. On the way to 6, saw going to 6 and 7 was part of route to finish. Try that and then reevaluate, but no energy, the prudent plan would be to abandon. Asked for any energy bar or food from 2 guys at 6; they had nothing. Then in the open area to 7, asked Gloria Waters and she kindly offered half of an energy bar. At this point from 4-7, walking most of the time, resting on uphills. Energy bar helped and ended up completing the course.

Hard effort the day before; long drive; lack of sleep. Was diet to blame, too?
Looks like Fritz did OK today. He wasn't happy getting stuck at the Des Moines race start yesterday. While did Mary do the white course today?

running/walking warm up/down 20:00 [1]

running/walking race 51:09 [5] 10.0 km (5:07 / km)
slept:8.0 shoes: OLway Tigers?

Living History Farms XC 10K (Des Moines, IA). Over 5000 competitors in the 27th event. Lots of run. Fritz Menninger, Dick Neuburger, David Coziahr and I teamed up with Lawrence speedster, Steve Riley, to form the Possum Trotter team. 4 mi of typical Midwest open field running. But, the fun stuff was the 2 miles in the wooded trails with about 7 stream crossings and 6 uphills - at least 3 with ropes to aid people up the muddy inclines. the orienteers had a great time using their studdedm spiked shors to clamor up the steeps slopes with no trouble. 6th M55 - happy with the even pace and the handling of the fun tough stretches. Warm enough to run in shorts, gloves and my Vermont O' beanie.

running/walking 18:00 [2]
slept:5.5 shoes: Asics GT2100

Wednesday Nov 16, 2005 #

running/walking 13:00 [3]
shoes: Salomon

AM - campus run
27 degrees, first cold morning run, but a lot better than last night's blustery winds.

strength/stretching 16:00 [2]

Wts - RW-B routine. 50# dumbbells for alternating bent over rowing

Monday Nov 14, 2005 #

biking (exercise bike) 11:00 [2]
shoes: Salomon

AM - 108 yd return by the Chicago Bear (orange uniforms?!) on the tube kept the boredom down...

strength/stretching 16:00 [2]

AM - RW-A workout (crowded again so didn't do last "back extension w/ lower trap raise." Used lat machine for last exercise.)

Sunday Nov 13, 2005 #

running/walking 1:52:00 [4] 13.5 mi (8:18 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: OLway Tigers?

AM - Kaw River bike trails.
1st loop, 5 mi - to test LNWM course. Saw that trail maintenance has closed off the old trails to avoid the confusing just before the turnaround. Turnaround is just past the big log bump.
33 min.
2 min rest, then
loop 2: full distance, did a lot of pace counting partly to see how the mile markers were placed. New trails lengthen the course but it appears the mile markers have not been reset. 40 min at the turnaround and then decided I wanted to be back at 1:20. ET for 2nd loop: 1:19 Good hard effort on last 5 miles.

Saturday Nov 12, 2005 #

orienteering (field checking) 2:00:00 [1]
shoes: VJ Falcon

AM - mapped in new bike trails at Shawnee Mission Park, then started to rain. Walked 95%, jogged a few times. Saw two deer - one with antlers - good sized.
Shoes splitting again at the toes (already reglued twice) - need new shoes. . .

shoes: Asics GT2100

AM - up Lawrence Ave, down Settler, Riverview, down Longhorn, Ranger, Saddlehorn, Wagon Wheel, then Fall Creek & home.
Good pace going back (inspired by the Jayhawks last night - Rush looks like Paul Pierce. Wright & Giles remind me of Manning. Looked good at times, but yes, they're not good enough to be ranked yet).

Right lower calf a little sore (overuse). Ankles, too, from using O'shoes again on rocky terrain. Can't use orthotics from by road running shoes.

Saturday Nov 5, 2005 #

running/walking warm up/down 15:00 [1]

AM - 8 min warmup
PM - 7 min warmup

orienteering race 1:13:41 [5] *** 7.3 km (10:06 / km) +255m 8:36 / km
13c slept:7.0 shoes: VJ Falcon

AM - PTOC - Blue Springs Lake (new map!) Red course. Nice area, Tom Hanely avoided the worse brambly areas. Tall grass in oepn areas a pain to keep the high knee lift. Overshot on #8, partly not use the using the 1:10000 scale again - kept coming up to controls and attack points sooner than expected. As Spike said - it's early in the season. But have been avoiding the "big booms". Get in the groove again to waste less time.

orienteering race 58:41 [5] ***
21c shoes: VJ Falcon

PM - Blue Springs Night O Score O' - again designed by Dick Luckerman. Not as clean a run as past years. Didn't read the control descriptions at all (not good, as they would have helped). I have to carry a small flashlight to read the map since the headlamp (too bright direct lighting when reading the map, or not enough in penumbra). Initially had an aversion to going into the green but had to go in to get the high poitns at the south end. Nice and cool - only one layer on top (overdressed in the past).

Thursday Nov 3, 2005 #

running/walking 43:00 [3] +132m

About 55 degrees at 6 am. Nice.

AM - weights/core/stability ball: RW-B workout

Tuesday Nov 1, 2005 #

Note
(rest day)

Needed to get to work, so skipped the long run. Read Kenny Moore's RW article about Bill Bowerman and not over training. I'm not usually one to over train, so maybe I was just lazy.
