Cycling warm up/down (To Event) 1:01:00 [3] 23.3 km (2:37 / km)

Home to Roehampton University. Quite a strong headwind made for tough going, particularly along York Road.
10 AM

Orienteering (Trail Challenge) 1:57:44 [3] ** 21.1 km (5:35 / km) +150m 5:23 / km
21c shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

SLOW Richmond Park Trail Challenge Half Marathon (mass-start). Deliberately slow jog the whole way around, as was being careful after shin problems last week. I felt them slightly, after about half an hour, but they hurt much less than last week so I think I got away with it. After around 14/15km other parts of the legs started to hurt, as would be expected for a half-marathon race. However, needing to be careful to avoid the many rutting stags in the park distracted me from any pain. Shins hurt a little more for the final 500m or so as I very slightly pushed up the pace. Weather was lovely - cloudy, quite breezy, with the sun coming out at the end. The ground was very soft (maybe why the shins were OK) and the park was as ever very pleasant to run in.

Cycling warm up/down (To Event) 1:00:00 [3] 24.4 km (2:28 / km)

Roehampton University to the Thames Barrier near Woolwich, with Brooner. Fantastic tail-wind, especially near the end, so we flew along. Unfortunately not quite fast enough to see the annual full lift.

Road Running (Back Home) 40:09 [3] 8.7 km (4:37 / km) +30m 4:32 / km
shoes: Nike Lunar +2s

Run home. Running with a largely empty bag on my back, as first test of running with kit for the OMM. Didn't push at any point, but had a nice tailwind to help me along. Inside shins started to hurt a bit after 25 minutes, and now hurting quite a bit afterwards (so no running for me on Thursday and Friday at least).

Night route on main roads - Cycle Route 0 and then City Road and Hackney Road. One climb - the 30m or so up around Percy Circus.

Apart from this, interestingly it was the arms, not the legs, that ached slightly.

I think I need to start running with shoes that counter my overpronation, so that I stop getting this distinctive pain on the lower inside leg.

Road Running (City Runners) 25:07 [4] 6.15 km (4:05 / km)
shoes: Nike Lunar +2s

City Runners club run. No fast group so ran with the middle group - then saw a couple of the fast group runners ahead, so sped to catch them, and was soon on my own. Thought I had the win, until 500m from the end Calvin (who had been just behind me from half-way point) eased past easily and beat me by just five seconds. Very fast finish - 3.35/km. Felt really good most of the way around, well hydrated and plenty of energy, probably could push even harder if I felt like this. GPS measured slightly short. Weather very pleasant, dry, warm but not hot, a bit breezy.

Road Running (In to Work) 39:46 [3] 8.82 km (4:31 / km)
shoes: Nike Lunar +2s

First try at running into work. Through park and along canal. Was pleased to be able to beat all the cyclists along Tavistock Place/Torrington Place thanks to the many red lights along there.

Likely to be doing more running to work over the next few weeks and will start running in with a bag (OMM practise.)

Planned autumn training regime is:
Monday: Run into work if no orienteering the day before, otherwise rest.
Tuesday: City Runners club run or SLOW Street-O.
Wednesday: Run home.
Thursday: Run into work or North London Street-O.
Friday: Rest
Saturday: parkrun
Sunday: Orienteering race.

The next six weekends are pretty busy with races:
9 October - SLOW Trail Challenge Half Marathon
16 October - CompassSport Cup Final
22/23 October - Cambridge City Race and JOK Champs
29/30 October - The OMM
5/6 November - Possibly the November Classic, except entries close before the OMM, no late/EOD, and I sure ain't entering before the OMM...
13 November - Venice Street Race
