Running 39:38 [3] 5.3 mi (7:29 / mi) +180m 6:46 / mi
shoes: NB642 #2

BAOC training run at Stanford. We run from Town and Country through campus to the DIsh and around the dish loop. The first part was very easy pace, then quite a bit faster around the Dish.

Orienteering 36:53 [2] 3.2 km (11:32 / km) +10m 11:21 / km
shoes: NB642 #2

A few controls Rex had mapped on the way back from the Dish to Town and Country. Taking a lot of rest between controls, and taking turns navigating, but with some good sprints.

Tahoe 2-day Classic at Spooner Lake. This was a complete disaster. I made 3 almost 10 minute mistakes in the first 6 controls and then 3 more 2-4 minute mistakes the rest of the way. At least it was a good workout and I did much more than the stated distance and climb. I had a lot of trouble taking accurate compass bearings both today and yesterday, something that I normally don't try to do. I think I need to practice, although this was only really partially responsible for one of my big mistakes.

Tahoe 2-day Middle at Spooner Lake. A pretty good run but I found the terrain very technically challenging so I was pretty careful. I think it paid off as my biggest mistake was only ~1.5 mins. If I had just avoided that I would have had a chance of winning since I was only 1:40 behind the winner in 4th place.

Running 29:17 [3] 3.9 mi (7:31 / mi) +130m 6:48 / mi
shoes: new NB

Rancho San Antonio with Charlotte. I tried a different route to try to avoid the big downhill at the end. This was slightly better but not a lot. I took Coyote to Rogue Valley to Mora to Lower Meadow to Permanente Creek to South Meadow.

Blue at China Camp. A course I found technically pretty challenging, although maybe I just wasn't focussed. Physically I felt pretty good, despite a lot of crawling through vegetation. I made a colossal mistake going from 7 to 8. I think what happened was I confused controls 6 and 8, so thought I had approached 7 from the direction of 8, ~180 degrees from where I had really approached. This led to me leaving 7 180 degrees from the right direction. It should have been obvious since I was going down instead of up and north instead of south. After I didn't find the trail I was looking for I was getting worried and when I ran into the registration area I knew something was horribly wrong. Even then it took me a couple of minutes to relocate. Probably I lost maybe 5 minutes, but I was lucky it wasn't much more.

On closer inspection it looks like my 180 degree error was maybe a better route anyway. If I had relocated immediately after hitting registration I think I would have had an ok time for this leg.

El Corte de Madera. I tried to do what I thought was Peter's loop. I got confused at one point and ended up taking a closed trail. Probably this wasn't Peter's loop anyway since I think it was too short. Even so, I walked the last 0.9 miles or so since I didn't want to run more than 35 minutes.
