Orienteering (Beaumont Hills) 46:00 [0] 2.6 km (17:42 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel - Trabuco 13

Took Lachlan to orienteering (4yo)

was explaining north on the way to the event with an interesting conversation:
"north is in that direction Lachlan, do you know why I know north is over there?"
"Because you are smart Daddy ..."
"awww, thanks Lachlan, that is a very nice thing to say"
"Yes, because you use your brain, and we all have brains, everybody."
"That is right Lachlan, we all have brains"
"Yes daddy, even girls have brains"

so we took the score option (so that we didn't DNF a line course) and started to get the first treasure (I told him the controls were like treasures, and the map was like a treasure map) in which he was very excited to find each treasure.
after getting controls numbered 1, 2 and 3, I wanted to go for the nearest control and perhaps turn back, but Lachlan was adamant that we had to get control 4, we got there after 30 total time mins so it was time to turn back and try to get home in 15, Lachlan did get a piggy back for about 300m due to sore legs, but he did do a bit of running around in the morning.
we got back 1 min late .. he was keen to do it again :)

11 AM

cycling (commute) 1:47:40 [3] 30.4 km (16.9 kph) +430m
ahr:134

decided to see how bad/good it is to ride to work (usually a 25 km drive down M7 and M2)
since the M2 is closed there is a detour that takes you near Paramatta (add 5kms and a few hills)

rather than a typical ride, it seemed more like intervals ..
8km warmup - M7 cyclepath
7 km intervals - stop-start down old windsor road, way too many lights
7 km Hill - slow gradual climb, some steeper bits
8km warmdown - zig-zag through back streets of Epping

only saw 3 other bikes on the M7 path, none either way on the M2 detour ?!?
7 PM

cycling (commute) 1:42:45 [3] 29.85 km (17.4 kph) +400m
ahr:131 max:154

back to home, but in the dark.
only 3 wrong turns (and 1 on the way to work)

spent a little less time waiting at lights (a little bit of being on the right side of the road, and also knowing where i needed to go, was able to avoid a few)

the big up hill section was much quicker going the other way.
took it slow early (due to morning ride and weekend runs) but felt good and pushed a little harder for the last 10 km.

Orienteering race (SL5) 1:36:58 [5] **** 13.13 km (7:23 / km) +231m 6:47 / km
ahr:162 max:183 shoes: New Balance MT411GB

lost small amounts of time due to small errors on 2,3,4,6,7,11 and took a gel on the way to 8 (drink plus a 1 minute walk to consume)

started at an easy pace and never felt as tired as yesterday, but did start to cramp on the 3rd last control
the last 3 controls were down hill so I didn't feel to bad even at the finish.

liked the map, felt at 1/2 way I was able to trust the tracks, even the minor ones (I haven't felt that way on many sydney maps)

uploaded GPS to Routegadget (3rd time lucky)

I was very impressed with the event (maps, courses, admin, results, splits+routegaget) well done to the Newcaslte club!
