In Blyde Canyon for a couple of days, staying right on the edge of the canyon. Went for a chilled run with Aoife, Roisin and Rory on the trails from the upper viewpoint to the campsite. Some pretty damn great views!!!

Note

Overall a really fun big 5 with some cool new maps and areas.

Not overally pleased with my runs, but definitely showed some solid orienteering in sections, just need to work on that 10% or so that I lose focus and end up stuffing up.

Nice result in the end being 3rd behind Hector and Anton Johansson, but that's mostly because a bunch of the big boys didn't do enough races to count for the overall.

Big 5 day 5. Sprint.

Absolutely useless start going off 90degrees wrong and losing over a min on that.. then another 30sec on 2 still not reading the map.. Okay from there besides for another 30sec loss at 18 where the joining line was covering an uncrossable wall.. Still very scrappy though.

On a positive, legs felt pretty great.

Oh. Also punched the wrong #6, so dq'ed as well..

Legs feeling good for the first time this past week,but my nav in the lower visibility forest was shocking. 1min lost on 4, 2min on 5, 30secs on 11? And 16 and then another minute on 21 looking for a gully instead of a spur..

Big5 day 3. WRE middle.

Very solid first 9 controls, then caught up to Carcas and preceded to stop navigating, lost 45ish secs at #10, then 2min at #14 (with a few others) and then 1min at #19. Running decently and I guess 4ish min isn't terrible, but still frustrating to lose focus again on what could've been a really good run.

Ended up in 4th, 5ish min down on Runesson, 3 on Howald and 1 on Hector.

Big 5 day 2

Felt like I was crawling around a bit, but still hitting controls half decently, then fecked #17 majorly. Route into it was fine, but hit a control about 50m south that seemed to make sense and just kept on relocating to that control before Freddie caught me and led me into the actual one.. lost 8min or so stuffing around there.. A few other 30 sec-1min mistakes the rest of the course, so should really have been running closer to 90min.. Still would've been smashed by Hector though with an 84. Hoping the body feels a bit more like running tomorrow.

Big 5 day 1.

Solid first half, but started struggling a bit the second half with the heat+ the nav started getting very scrappy and just crawled home the last 7 controls or so.

1:30 lost on #14 and then another 3min or so between #12, #16, #19, #20 and #21.

Happy enough with the result, but pretty disappointed with that second half. Could've been really good if I'd managed to keep focus a bit more. (Probably the best chance for a win with the bushveld terrain+heat)

3:30 down on Hector and a min or so down on Emil.
