Linear orienteering race 43:49 [5] *** 10.41 km (4:13 / km)
spiked:21/28c shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

St Albans City Race 2013
No major errors but a number of sub-optimal route choices and a fair bit of hestitation / general scrappiness meant I wasn't too surprised to see in the final results that I'd dropped from 1st to 4th.

Control 1 caught me out as I rushed in the first leg before I'd attuned to the scale and level of detail; maybe lost 10-20 seconds here and then a few more with a slight hesitation early in my route to 2. Almost lost focus and was consequentially hesitant around 6 and 7.

I was broadly happy with my routes to the next few controls, although lost a few seconds in the closing stages to leg 12 a couple of people sat on the bench were obscuring it (not quite standing in the way of control). Slightly hesitant out of 12 and possibly could have pushed it more to 13 and for the next 4. With 18, the day's longest leg, I'd be inclined to say that I was reasonably happy with my route choice (back up to the Cathedral and then a near straight as I could) although I recognise I could have run faster had I turned left at the road beyond the Cathedral and then right along the main road. The route most people I spoke to took - along the southern edge of the cathedral park - didn't occur to me, partly because I didn't see the path continuing east from this (in retrospect its obvious). Don't think this would've been much quicker though. Generally happy with my routes from here on, although 26 could've been much neater.

Cycling 17:44 [3] 4.6 mi (3:51 / mi)

Cycle to Leytonstone from Woodford. Probably 3 effort level (at least) given how windy it was.

Rode up to my parents' house in Woodford to borrow a car. Fairly gentle.

Track running race 16:29 [5] 5.0 km (3:18 / km)
shoes: Reebok long distance track spi

5,000m (Southern Athletics League match 1, Watford)
First race back since the marathon, and fortunately only the 1 rather than the 2km steeplechase too, as I feared I might have been asked to run.

I had felt recovered by Wednesday, and ran smoothly on Thursday morning, but I guess this showed that I've probably not fully recovered. I was broadly pleased with my run, having said I'd be happy with sub 16:30 and I'd like to think that, this early in the season and with it being only a week since the VLM, I ought to be able to manage at least a couple of sub 16s later in the season. That said, I know I'll need to work for this - while I wasn't too far off the leading group of Bertie, Ryan and a Serpie for the first half, they pulled away over the final half, gaining an ever increasing lead on me on each lap (they maintained a fairly even pace, I faded).

Road running (Commute) 48:01 [3] 11.43 km (4:12 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Run into work, via The Orient, Ruckholt Road, Victoria Park etc.
My first run back since the VLM and on the whole felt really good. A little bit of pain in my left foot / ankle, similar to what I'd felt over the past few weeks and not major discomfort.

Physio / sports massage session in Bethnal Green at 0800. I'd considered cycling to it but decided against.
