Orienteering race 3:06:00 [4] 7.7 mi (24:09 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SuperCross Blue

Ran a km up the road where Cliff met us to take our boats.
I give SM major props for doing this. They could have made us lug our boats for another 7 miles but that wasn't necessary so they picked them up for us. It certainly would have made a big difference in strategy on the trek because we probably would have opted to drop our boats somewhere instead of carrying them.

It took us a second to locate the first CP but once we got close we were able to identify where we were and where we needed to go. We made our biggest mistake on the second CP. As we sidehilled and climbed to the next CP we climbed too much and went around the hill instead of across the saddle to the next hill. We realized it not too long after and adjusted. Only lost about 10'.

We saw a lot of the other coed teams trekking on this section going in different directions. We could then assume that most of them opted not to do the packraft.

We opted to come back to the road between CP 38 and 39. We ended up having to cross a swamp because of it. We figured it might have been better to take the direct route instead but looking at the satellite imagery maybe not as there would have been another swamp to cross or go around. Either way we got nice and wet and cooled off.

TA race 15:00 [0]

Another slower TA. I was trying to manage (care for) some chafing in my crouch.

Road Biking race 2:02:00 [4] 22.1 mi (10.9 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Road ride to the next trek section. We road alongside many teams including Rootstock, SM and Untamed.

My headlamp died 5 minutes in so I just used my front mounted light but that meant I couldn't watch maps. But it wasn't a big deal since it was straightforward. Eventually the sun came up and I could read them for the last little bit. Just in time for me to save us from some unnecessary trail riding.
5 AM

TA race 8:30 [0]

Orienteering race 2:56:30 [4] 7.4 mi (23:51 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Short trek section. We started not sure if we were going to be able to clear it but we got 5 of the 13 in the first hour. We figured we had about 3.5 hours so despite the next 8 (9 including the TA) definitely being slower we figured we had a chance. We had to make a decision to go for the 2 farther CPs eventually but it was pretty clear we had a shot and if we needed we could end up dropping 1 or 2 of the closer CPs.

2 more swam CPs but only 1 required some swampy boots but no swimming.
8 AM

TA race 3:30 [0]

Road Biking race 41:18 [4] 9.54 mi (13.9 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Got back with an hour and a half. We set a limit of 1 hour figuring that would be enough. We figured we had more CPs than anyone so it wasn't worth risking being late. We were hoping to give ourselves a little bit more cushion and doing so was nice. Turns out we didn't need it but you never know. Again we passed a lot of team on our way to the finish.

Maine Summer AR w/Mari/Biz

Temps were warm but not too bad. We did the paddling in the heat of the day which helped. Lots of riding (mostly road or hard surfaces). I really enjoyed the offroad surface riding (except for the sand).

The course had a lot of variety and a good amount of controls to keep things moving. Excellent job by Strong Machine.

We bought an extra set of maps. It was really nice to have an extra set. Mostly helpful on the trekking sections but where I could I stayed on map during the biking and paddling. Tried not to let messing with maps slow me/us down though.

Clearing the course came down to the wire but we made it. We made very few mistakes.

Orienteering race 37:00 [4] 3.05 mi (12:08 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Prologue
Did the first half with Rootstock.
We had to spell two words using the control letters. This was interesting, strategical, and fun. We chose the same words as Rootstock.

Not sure the other choices would have been longer so it was really about choosing something quickly and going for it.

Road Biking race 1:07:30 [4] 14.6 mi (13.0 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

We got a slight lead on Rootstock and were able to leave on our bikes before they got back. We fumbled a bit out of the farm but then figured it out. The ride was straightforward.

Mari thought she was having some tire issues but it seemed ok.
11 AM

Orienteering race 22:30 [4] 1.1 mi (20:27 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

On the way to the paddle there was a section where we could split and collect 2 CPs on foot and 2 CPs on bike. I put my running shoes on and got the 2 CPs on foot. Pretty much a straight bushwhack up a mountain and then straight back down.

I got back 1 minute before Mari/Biz. Just enough time to change my shoes again.
12 PM

Road Biking race 5:00 [4] 1.3 mi (15.6 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Short and fast downhill to the putin.

TA race 10:30 [0]

A bit slow so we could figure out boats and water.

Paddling race (Sea kayaks 2+1) 3:37:00 [4] 15.4 mi (4.3 mph)

Left before we saw any other teams come in.

Basically paddling across one lake and then another and then back. We paddled into the wind on the way out and with the wind (mostly) on the way back.

We chose an opposite direction to Rootstock on the second lake so we saw them on the far end. SM and Untamed followed us.

I started being towed in the solo so we could balance the front boat but I was just sitting in the back boat keeping in the draft not doing much work. We decided to switch 30' in and I steered the front boat. This way we'd get the full benefit of my "power." Mari went in the back boat so Biz could focus on nav.

It took us a few min to locate the first CP on the second lake and then lost some time crossing some rocks to get to the last CP.
3 PM

TA race 11:30 [0]

More water filling and burger eating.
4 PM

Mountain Biking race 4:10:00 [4] 33.7 mi (8.1 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

We got back on our bikes for a nice MTBO-style leg. A lot of the riding was on ATV trails. Most of them were hard and somewhat rocky and fun. Occasionally they were full of loose sand. Sometimes so much so that we had to get off and walk for a minute. The sand was pretty minimal right after I told Biz that I had had enough. Thanks!
8 PM

TA race 21:00 [0]

A long TA to restock on food/water and prep our packrafts and second backpacks.

Paddling race 1:21:00 [4] 3.8 mi (2.8 mph)
shoes: Alpacka Caribou

We paddled northwest into the sunset to get the first CP and came back without seeing any other teams.

We then came back through TA and Cliff told us the start of the next section would be a bit messier. It was. We had to cross a lot of small beaver dams. About every 100m or so. We also were struggling to match the stream to the map. We eventually found the first CP and the river opened up nicely for clear paddling and began to match the map very well.
10 PM

Orienteering race 48:30 [4] 1.8 mi (26:57 / mi)
shoes: Salomon SuperCross Blue

We decided to stop midway through the paddle to collect 2 CPs from the trek. The CPs were pretty easily accessible from the stream and made for a much more efficient trek route but meant we had to do an out and back.

I am not sure if this was more efficient given the time it took to get in and out of the boats and get from the stream to the road but it was at least a nice break and definitely wasn't significantly more time. We toyed with getting more CPs on this trek but it would have meant a lot of extra road running later.

Paddling race 1:05:30 [4] 3.1 mi (2.8 mph)
shoes: Alpacka Caribou

We finished the paddle on the stream. I was even able to keep up with Mari/Biz (in the Gnu) without being in their draft.
11 PM

TA race 6:00 [0]

Quickly rolled up the boats.

Pandapas
Not all fast but decent pace. Hit some trails that I wanted to ride.

Climb up Beauty was slow with lots of touches. Coming across Prickly Pear wasn't too bad though.

Stopped halfway through to take a work call.

New @3.3' Whitethorne
River was high (1' higher than last week) so I had to paddle down river instead of up like I had wanted. Paddled as far as I could go and be able to paddle back up. Stopped right before a big ledge. Had to go around another right before that. Beautiful weather.

Felt good but pace was a little slow. Not sure if that is due to fitness or the high water level.
