Pandaplace
Wanted to get in a ride on the new trails before some potential rain next week. Turned onto the first trail and found out in 400m that it wasn't completed (not that this was advertised anywhere). Tried walking the planned route some but eventually bailed and climbed to the main trail. Rode the rest of the trails (which all existed :-)

Trails were nice. Bottom half of the DH trail (BlunderBuss) was a bit much for me.

Turtle out but not back as I was already late.

Homplace w/Zitch/Skip
Was thinking hills but decided to take it a bit easier. I did push the last several hills

Zitch started limping halfway through the Turtle climb. He walked it off a bit but clearly wasn't able to use it fully for the rest of the run (~15 min). He'll be resting for a couple weeks.

Brush
New trails are finally open. Similar run to last May 21. Similar pace. Conditions were much more optimal today though. Warm, cloudy, with a nice breeze. Thought my legs would be strong today. They weren't tired but weren't as light and quick as I was thinking given the light load coming in.

New River Packraft Adventure w/ Mark

Warm day but neither of us got too hot. Mark has been doing a lot of packrafting practice but it was good for me to reintroduce myself and refamiliarize myself with the process.

Highlights were seeing bald eagles, nests, and babies.
12 PM

Road Biking 12:41 intensity: (4:12 @1) + (5:59 @2) + (2:30 @3) 3.36 mi (15.9 mph) +125ft
ahr:124 max:149

Short ride to McCoy to put into Toms Creek. Used my old Cannondale setup.

My pack was not well packed but it wasn't worth the hassle to mess with it for this short ride. I figured out better ways to get everything in later.

Paddling 1:03:01 [2] 2.88 mi (2.7 mph) +37ft
ahr:106 max:136

First time paddling Tom's Creek. I knew it was low and would have chosen a higher level to do this if possible. We did have to navigate under some cattle fences that would have been harder at higher levels. One of which had long point wires that I am not sure weren't electrified.

Water was low which meant we had to get out quite a bit and boats were dragging a lot too. Could have been fun at a higher level.

I also had trouble getting the pressure of the boat up. I think it was that I didn't fill it up enough at the start and it took 3 refills to get it where it needed to be.

Orienteering 28:59 intensity: (17:48 @1) + (9:17 @2) + (1:54 @3) 1.61 mi (18:00 / mi) +231ft 15:51 / mi

Pulled out just after the small drop (which we couldn't really see at this level).

We overshot the takeout just a tad but that was safer and it allowed us to go under the RR through a neat tunnel and made our climb up to the RR easier. No issues with the Arsenal property but we did come down a reentrant to the river on private property. We were able to stay away from the house at least.

We probably could have stuck to the arsenal fenceline and been "safer."

Next time Mark wants to take the tunnel.

New @ Peppers Ferry 3.1'
Did a better job of filling the raft this time. Was a little concerned about the rapids through the arsenal but they were nothing in the raft. Much easier than the Swifty.

Saw a couple bald eagle nests. One after each of the bridges. The first was bigger and had some babies looking out. Parents were swarming overhead.

This paddle was pretty easy for me after I caught up to Mark (gave him a head start). I had the faster boat so I was taking it a bit easy. We hit a strong headwind as we were coming into Whitethorne.

Packed up and ran back to our bikes.

Road Biking 20:17 intensity: (5:46 @1) + (13:09 @2) + (1:22 @3) 3.77 mi (11.2 mph) +327ft
ahr:124 max:146

Short ride back to the river. Pack was much better packed this time allowing me to look over my shoulder.
5 PM

Paddling 20:09 intensity: (1:11 @0) + (18:42 @1) + (16 @2) 1.13 mi (3.4 mph) +19ft
ahr:107 max:124

We debated for a few minutes how to get to the river and where to leave the bikes. Luckily a lady let us cross her property while she was gardening.

Started my watch late.

Almost immediately went over and into a bent piece of rebar underwater sticking out of some concrete. Fortunately the rebar was bent downriver.

I took the slow boat for this stretch. Wasn't bad. It's a little shorter so a tad slower and tracking is just a little touchier. Less roomy too but enough. The seat got a hole in it too so I wasn't able to see as well and get my body up.

At the end we paddled down McCoy Falls. Not sure I have done this in a boat before. Not a problem in the rafts. Took on a good bit of water because the spray skirt wasn't sealed.

Orienteering 1:19:27 intensity: (14:05 @1) + (57:28 @2) + (7:54 @3) 5.47 mi (14:31 / mi) +1312ft 11:50 / mi
ahr:128 max:159 shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

Trek back to the house.

We got super lucky and a friend who had passed us on our bikes and was paddling at the falls was driving back and took our packrafts back for us. This saved us lugging the packrafts up and over Brush Mountain. Very appreciated.

Trek went as planned. The climb from Norris Run was straightforward and clear.
