Climbed Moana Loa w/KT
Drove up to the trailhead at 11,000ft from the resort at 0ft in time to see the moonset and before twilight. This gave us about an hour to acclimate as well. I was also hoping there might be some nice stargazing but not the case. The dark window was too short, unfortunately.

After sunrise we hit the trail. Two other groups were at the trailhead by that point. Both were planning to go to the summit. We weren't sure we'd make it to the summit. Depended on how fast we moved since we had to be back by lunch.

The trail started on the road. We soon switched to the trail. The trail was nothing but Ahus (cairns) across the volcano. For 90% of the trail there was no sign of a trail other than that. We were hiking briskly and were struggling to breathe. We also were hiking directly into the rising sun which made spotting ahus a bit more difficult. Temps were cool (40F) at the start but warmed up (50F). We wore the right layers for the trip.

We passed the first road crossing without spotting it and eventually made it to the next one. I dropped the map here and had to go back for it. As we left the road again we had a nice trail for a half mile or so. The trails then got rocky again (not as bad as the first section) and then smoother as we reached the edge of the North Pit 13,000ft.

We moved slower than expected across the lava rock and didn't have enough time for the summit so we explored the North Pit a bit took lots of pictures and then turned back down the volcano. KT was pretty worn out as well so we would have needed a good bit of time to make it all the way to the summit. We saw the two other groups on the way down that we saw at the start and then maybe 5 or 6 other pairs of hikers. We made it back to the cars without any issues. And then drove back down to 0ft

It was pretty crazy the degree of desolation on this hike. We didn't see any living things except one spider. The only water we saw was the remnants of snow and frost from the storm a few days ago. In the North Pit we could be quiet and if the wind was light enough it was utterly silent.

A very neat experience but we would have maybe enjoyed having a geology expert to teach us some along the way.
