Orienteering race 2:03:07 [4] 10.7 mi (11:30 / mi) +1407ft 10:14 / mi
(sick) shoes: Salomon Trailster
GoFest Wild Gear Chase
Did my best to be able to do this race. I was surprised at how well I felt from a sickness standpoint. My body started breaking down and I had trouble breathing after about 50 minutes. It didn't help that I haven't done anything for 4 months.
I tried to be super hydrated and fueled before the race. I took two doses of Pepto. Which apparently worked. I didn't have to go to the bathroom at all before, during, or after the race. Lately I have been going every hour or so.
Mark and Teresa were there. We got the maps and planned a route together. The maps were super crappy as usual (proved to actually be worse than usual) and I was glad to have the supplemental I had brought. We started together as well making sure to get all the close easy points. We didn't realize that the controls were different values (more on this later).
Once we got the close ones it became a major road race. A mile or more at a time between controls. There was a major route choice. I pushed for the way we took. Mark was thinking another. If we had executed the other way perfectly we could have saved 2-3 minutes.
Just before we got to the mountain I was really starting to slow and couldn't keep up with Mark. He chose a slightly different route over the river as well and pulled away noticeably. After getting on the trail I immediately went off trail straight up hill. After a few minutes I realized I dropped my map while picking up some walking sticks. I had to go all the way back to the trail and then back up some to find it.
Anyway I offset my bearing to make sure I didn't miss the point along the trail. When I got to the trail I turned and some people were looking for the point the wrong way (I thought). I went about 300m the right way (I thought) and just past where the point was marked. Someone else then came by and told me it was the other way. The point was marked on the trail 450m off!!!!
Anyway kept on climbing and going. Hit the next point well and then the top. At this point I figured on my distance estimate (a little more than 2 miles) I should have enough time (27 mins) to get one more point (leaving one on the course) and get back in time. There was a big downhill shwack and then a road run. I knew my pace was going to be slower but figured I could manage ~10-11min/mile.
I made it down the hill but it took a lot of energy as it was steep and I was worn out. I then ran to where the last point was plotted and it wasn't there. Turns out I had gone right over it. It was under a bridge but the CP circle wasn't even touching the bridge and it wasn't provided in the clue. I lost 5 min. I know had 15 min to do what I thought should be less than a 2 mile run but maybe close. I knew I wasn't going to make it unless it was shorter.
I made it back 4 minutes late. I hadn't really listened to the rules and though I lost 5 controls but I only lost 25 points. And the last control I got was 40 points so it wasn't too bad. I didn't realize this though until after they put everyone in order to go into the gear tent and let people in. I finally said something. They said I was 6th but probably 20 people had already gone in. For some reason they skipped over calling my number :-(
I ended up bringing home a Coleman Stove which wasn't an amazing win but not bad (Mark finished 3rd and got a kayak similar to what I got 8 years ago). Again certainly could have been much worse (but also much better).
Total distance was typical but much more of that was on road than in the park than usual. Even so my pace was slower given my condition.
