Had planned a morning run with E but the power went out very early this morning. Power came back in the afternoon so I went for a ride instead. A bit suprised with my pace considering my condition and how I felt. My legs felt weak and I felt slow on Trillium and Skullcap. In a couple other places my pace was decent but I didn't feel it. Must be the rested legs.

Lockdown Stage 2 - Leg 5
Mountain Lake ROGAINE - Mark's permanent orienteering course. He recently reset the course and had been wanting people to vet it so this was a good opportunity. I wore shin sleeves because I saw the nettle as I was riding up the mountain yesterday. Turns out the nettle was almost up to my waist so it still got me. Only hit one patch right after the start though. Ferns were also 2-4 feet high.

Made a mistake attacking T. I took the parallel unmapped trail and didn't adjust. Attacked the control twice before realizing it. On my way out almost found it but couldn't see the control pipe (story of the day). Reattacked and came to the same spot and searched and finally found it. Lost 15 min.

Almost turned around right before I saw E coming down the spur.
Tried to switch trails on my way to G but hadn't realized I had already walked over the first one. Ended up sidehilling all the way to the point instead.

Then I got to Y. It looked reasonably findable. The clue was rootstock. I took a rough bearing and did a rough pace count and looked for rootstocks but didn't see any. I had also gotten almost all the way to the boundary so I figured I overshot a little. So I reattacked from the boundary and no luck. I searched around for a little more than tried reattacking again with a bit more accuracy to my pace counting. I stopped at my pace count looked around and found the most pathetic rootstock barely sticking out of the ferns with the pipe hanging from it. Lost 22 min.

Next 5 controls were smooth and got some fresh water at D. Then at J I ran into more troubles. I attacked the control straight on. Then when I saw the reentrant I dropped in right away and then walked up so I would have some good coverage. Couldn't find it so then I checked low again. Not there so I checked even higher. Still no luck so I reattacked with a strong bearing and pace count. Still no luck. I gave up and started walking up the reentrant and found it 5m past the farthest place I had searched. It was under the layer of ferns. I felt it was misplaced so I moved it a little further down the reentrant. After reviewing on QuickRoute I confirmed it was outside the circle and I moved it almost to the center of the circle. 17 min lost

No more issues after that. I continued to try and be extra careful.

I finished in exactly 4 hours. Which is surprising considering all the trouble I had and the pace I was going at. The distance was shorter than I planned (13.5 mi) and had I not done so much searching it would have been even less.

The difficulty I had isn't too surprising. Mountain Lake (while having lots of elevation) has mostly broad features. A lot of the forest isn't clear/runnable. And the pipes I was looking for are not very obvious especially when hanging against a tree.

Except for Y and J I very much enjoyed myself and it was nice to do some real orienteering and practice my pace counting skills.

Lockdown Stage 4 - Leg 6
Brush Mountain and Pandapas. Connecting to the run I did on Thursday. Started after twilight. Enjoyed the night ride. First time going all the way up Brush since I met the neighbors and first time ever on my bike. Rode all the way across Brush to 460 and collected to Geocaches.

Crossed over to the other side and rode the DT behind Preston Forest to the top of Spine and then back to The Wire. Took me a minute to figure out where the trail was. It was actually a really nice trail.

Picked up another cache on Craig Creek at the shotgun range before coming back to Pandapas. Stopped to look for two caches but couldn't find either of them. Rode PC all the way back and then up Turtle.

Stopped at the top of the mountain to enjoy the fresh air and moonlight. Stopped my workout and it accidentally discarded the workout. Super bummer :-( Trying to recover it the best I can. Used Recuva to get the files off the watch. AP will only upload the first hour. Fit File Repair Tool seems to be able to get 2:20 but not the rest and I don't have a license and I don't think it is worth the license fee. It should have a one time use license or something

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Lockdown Stage 3 - Leg 3
Rode to Mountain Lake and back. Had been wanting to do this ride for a while and this was a good chance to get it in finally. Ride was nice, scenic and well shaded. Will definitely be doing this again without the geocaches.

Stopped for 5 geocaches. Officially logged 2, couldn't find another because the app took longer than 5 minutes to load. The other 2 were earth caches. Another cache I had planned on was recently taken down.

Visited
● Two (covered) bridges
● An interesting tombstone/tomb in Hoges Chapel Cemetery
● Eggleston/Ingles historical marker/monument
● Several abandoned buildings
● No ruins that I know of (unless you count the abandoned buildings)
● Lots of stone retaining walls on the climb
● Mounain Lake Restaurant

New @ Whitethorne 3.3'
Paddled up the the ledge (which at this height was just fast-moving water. Then paddled down to McCoy Falls. Stopped at River's Edge Geocache. Looked some but there was a couple with their tent set up right on the coordinates. There wasn't much of a clue. Also I couldn't reconnect once I got out of the boat to get the clue or the exact location because there was no service where I was. I tried to look around without getting too close to the campers but I didn't see anything so I just moved on.

Water was high enough that all the ledges towards the end were pretty easily crossed. Lots of people out on the river. Most I have ever seen. Not surprised.

Lockdown Stage 5b - Leg 2b
Left the boat at the falls and ran back to the house from the takeout.
The outsole of my shoes sheared off in the boat so I was effectively running in heavy socks. The pavement wasn't too bad but could feel all the little pieces of gravel on the gravel section. Some of the gravel section has actually been paved and most of the culverts for Norris Run seem rebuilt. They might pave the whole thing soon.

These shoes are about 17 years old. They are my favorite water shoes. I may try to glue them back together and get some more life out of them.

Lockdown Stage 5c - Leg 2c
Transitioned to my road bike at the house and then road back to the car at Whitethorne. Mostly downhill. Had originally thought to run this but felt better riding it and I don't need any more foot travel. Was also short on time as it was.

Scared the black snake away from the front door when I got home. Still smelling the baby chick smell from when they were in the house.

Lockdown Stage 1 - Leg 1
Brushy Gap Loop to include a trip to the Audie Murphy Monument. Haven't really been on any of these trails before. Thought I might have enough time to include the trail on Gap but it ended up being longer than AllTrails said so I lost some time to that and the climb just absolutely killed my legs. I was fortunate to meet a fellow professor right when I got to my 5-mile road stretch. He drove me back (in the back seat) to my car and I avoided having to run the 5 miles of road. It also got me back on time instead of being really late. Having a road bike to help with the shuttle would have worked pretty well too. This was also better than the option of skipping the Gap trails and making it a 10mi road run.

An absolutely beautiful Barred Owl swooped down in front of me along Brush Ridge and flew in front of me for a few seconds. Not long enough to get a picture though.

Had planned for a geocache at AM but it got taken away in the last week or so. Skipped the geocache at Caldwell as I didn't want to make my colleague wait.
