Paddling the packraft w/Nut/E and Uncle Billy in the kayak.
The boat worked well with the inside seat. Have to be careful of knocking their heads with the paddle though. The girls traded time in the kayak with Uncle Billy on the way back.

I think there is a small leak in the seat.

The girls had a good time. We saw lots of good wildlife. A goose on their nest on the island, lots of turtles as usual, and an otter swimming by the shore that we were trying to track a bit.

Adventure Racing race 17:46:53 [0] 92.18 mi (11:34 / mi) +10092ft 10:29 / mi
ahr:100 max:149

Berryman Adventure Race w/Mari/Biz
Excellent course with lots of climbing. Course was also fast. Fast paddling and riding and LOTS of CPs which kept it exciting.

We thought we were going to clear it at first but got behind schedule and had to guess a bit about the unknown orienteering section to make good choices of what CPs to get. Also lots of options to get CPs during different legs which incorporated strategy a bit and also meant a "lead" on the course didn't particularly mean you were going to win the race.

The weather was really cold at the start but warmed up to a beautiful day. Rib was racing hard and made sure we didn't ease off the gas pedal at all. We also wanted to try and get as much as possible but also couldn't risk losing CPs for being late.

We left a total of 7 CPs out on the course and only 13 minutes.

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [4] 4.0 mi (15:15 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Short trek to the paddle put in. Started just as we were getting some daylight so we had small lights on but didn't need them much especially along the road. Chilly at the start, about 30F.
7 AM

TA race 6:00 [0]

Got the boat and gear ready. Canoe paddles were frozen to the ground.

Paddling race (3p Canoe) 2:37:00 [4] 14.7 mi (5.6 mph)

Paddle along the Current river. And there was a lot of current! We were flying, 6-9mph. I used a canoe paddle to steer most of the time. We also had lots of CPs along the river, several requiring us to get out and trek a little to. One CP had floated down the river. We spent 15 min looking for it before another team caught us and spotted it 100m on the shore downriver.

Hands were pretty cold. I was holding the frozen paddle and Biz had no gloves while getting splashed. Mari was toasty in her Pogies.

Lost my headlamp which I hadn't taken off yet. Fortunately, it wasn't the one I was planning to use for later in the race.
9 AM

Orienteering race 1:24:00 [4] 3.8 mi (22:06 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Short trek to get our bikes with a few CPs along the way.

Biz thought we passed the second road when we passed the first one while we were traversing the ridgeline and we descended WAY too early. We didn't realize it until we were in the bottom of the reentrant. We decided it was best at that point to run out the reentrant, take the road across to the right reentrant, and run up that instead of doing a big climb back to the ridge. We lost about 30 min.
11 AM

Road Biking race 26:30 [4] 3.0 mi (6.8 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Biked back to where we left our boats. Had trouble at one point as we came across a trail we didn't remember.

Paddling race (3p Canoe) 1:08:00 [4] 3.5 mi (3.1 mph)

First we ferried the boats across the river in a swift part of the river. I shuttled Mari and Biz across with the bikes. Took about 15 min.

Then we finished up the paddling. One longer trek (1/2 mile) to get a CP that was closer to the river than our last trek.

More ferrying at the end. Dropped Mari/Biz off then went back to get 2 volunteers, portage the boat back up river, and then paddle back to Mari/Biz. The volunteers were overly cautious and we could have done this much more efficiently. Took just under 10 min.
12 PM

Orienteering race 46:30 [4] 2.2 mi (21:08 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

Trek over a ridge back to our bikes
1 PM

TA race 6:30 [0]
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Pretty quick TA to bike.

Rib was ferrying their bikes as we picked ours up which meant we had a 1+ hour lead but we were pretty confident they had picked up some CPs earlier on in the paddle that we saved for later in the race.

Road Biking race 3:59:00 [4] 39.5 mi (9.9 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Long road bike ride with no obvious route choice. Biz spent a lot of time rolling different options the night before and found what he thought was best.

Most of the CPs were beyond the TA so we had the option to skip some and we were starting to realize we might not clear the course. Unfortunately, we didn't know how long the Orienteering leg was. We knew how many CPs but not how far apart. So once we got near the TA I calculated how fast we needed to get CPs to clear the course and we were clearing the bike CPs at that rate or better. So, theoretically, either the trek CPs would be shorter and we would clear the course or they would be longer and we wouldn't clear the course but we would want to skip the trek CPs anyway.

Several of the bike CPs didn't have flags and the clues weren't very specific to exactly where the punch was hanging so it took us a few minutes of searching to find it.

There was a lot of climbing and I was feeling strong so I did some towing of Biz and Mari. Really made me work.

We did come across some private property signs along the road and seemed to get awfully close to someone's house but we tried to be as quick and respective as possible just in case. We later learned that Rib got chased away with a gun by the property owner who claimed it was private but RD said the road was public. RD probably should have just removed the last CP and not risked it. Would have made the course flow better as well.
5 PM

TA race 25:30 [0]

Filled up on bacon :-b and Biz/Mari plotted CPs.

No sign of Rib. Weren't sure if they may drop some bike CPs to focus on the orienteering or not. Also we still didn't know if/how many more CPs they collected earlier than us. We just stayed focused on our plan and what we thought was the way to get the most CPs.
6 PM

Orienteering race 4:10:00 [4] 9.9 mi (25:15 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4 (DkBlue)

As we started it was pretty obvious we weren't going to clear the course so we started strategizing. We identified 1 bike CP which we no longer wanted to get and the rest of the bike CPs we could decide whether to drop or not depending on how long the bike was taking and when exactly we got back.

We started the orienteering in the more dense set of CPs. As we made our way back towards the TA and the more spread CPs we decided to drop 3. This would get us back to TA with enough time to get most of the remaining bike CPs (give or take) which was perfect.

Clean and smart navigation.

At one point, I almost completely pierced my ear with a broken branch sticking out of a pine tree. Put a buff on to stop the bleeding and left it on for the rest of the race.
10 PM

TA race 11:00 [0]

Back to our bikes and some more bacon.
Probably longer than it should have taken.

Road Biking race 1:25:53 [4] 11.58 mi (8.1 mph)
shoes: Viathon M1 GX

Final bike to the finish with sevaral CPs to try and get along the way. we saw Rib running back to the TA on our ride out which likely meant they didn't get too many CPs on the trek and meant we likely had a lead of several CPs on them as well as a 15 min lead on time.

We dropped a long out and back CP but got 2 shorter out and backs. We saw Rib after the first out and back but they skipped the second and the we were riding mostly together.

There were two other CPs that required a short trek but we didn't have enough time for them.

We had planned to get one CP on the way to the finish but I realized one short stretch of road might have been off-limits. We didn't get any printed rules of travel *tisk tisk* but the RD mentioned some roads during the pre-race meeting that I forgot to write down, *tisk tisk* on me. We waited 2 minutes for Rib to catch up and asked them. They confirmed the road was not allowed to be ridden so we just dropped the CP (which we knew we didn't need to win) and took the pavement back to the finish.

Afterward we realized we could have just dismounted and ran alongside the 250m of road instead. Again it wasn't needed but good to try and remember for next time.

Was originally planning on shorts and arm warmers but when it started hailing as I left the house I grabbed leg warmers and a winter jacket. No precipitation on my ride but it was nice having the extra warmth. Sun came out after making it more manageable.

Ride back to the car. Light pack. Moreso TW10 but some pretty heavy crosswinds which made the fast descents sketchy.

With the sun out I reverted back to my original clothing plan.

Pace was slower than I was hoping for. Two main climbs with steep finishes but downhill and flat on pretty much everything in between.

My first time climbing Seneca from this direction and finished it off with Friendship which i've only climbed once before. Also, my first time climbing Georges Run. The bottom was a nice climb.

Finished with a HW into town.
