Orienteering race 1:00:00 [4] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

Relay O
I did a quick first short tricky leg in bike shoes. Julia (short easy leg) and Earl (tricky steep leg) changed shoes to do the next two legs. I changed into shoes for the last somewhat tricky leg. The two short legs were only 800m. The two longer legs were about 1300m.

Mountain Biking race 3:00:00 [4] 12.4 mi (4.1 mph) +1600ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro IV

Started just before daybreak. We grabbed some extra water for the ride to the finish then climbed to Woodstock tower. Then grabbed points just off the road/trail back to the finish. One required a 250ft climb through laurel.

The trails at Elizabeth Furnace we thought might be difficult weren't too bad making for almost 6 mi of good single track riding with a fun 500ft descent.

Adventure Racing race 23:50:00 [0]

Massanutten Massacre with Earl and Julia.
Weather was great and the course was fun, interesting, and completely linear. There were almost 100 racers. We were the only team to clear the course. Jesse was close missing only the one CP that gave us trouble too. I felt pretty good. Think my calf was great after the massage work on Friday. Felt a little overworked at the end of the first trek but was in helper mode the rest of the time.

Orienteering race 4:00:00 [4] 15.0 mi (16:00 / mi) +3786ft 12:55 / mi
shoes: Brooks Mazama

Linear trek along the mountain ridge. Steady up and then steady down.
At one CP hinted as boulder field we found Mark's Caution flagging for the CP in a large boulder field but no control. Searched a little more and found the CP on a small rock pile 100m W surrounded by laurel. Attacked from above and met Odyssey attacking from below at the same time.

Got excited and attacked the next CP too early. Thought we were approaching a saddle but it was just the trail entering a flat spot of the reentrant. Should have paid more attention to the map and confirmed before attacking. Got to see Odyssey at the point attacking from different directions again though.

On our rocky descent, we were impressed by a group of 4-5 kids followed by their dad pushing their bikes (most not real MTB) up the hill. They weren't even halfway and the kids were asking if it got better. Gave them the bad news. Super impressed by their character though.

Road Biking race 20:00 [4] 4.8 mi (14.4 mph) +570ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro IV

Bike to paddle put in.
Started with KOM climb and then big downhill to TA.
1 PM

Paddling race (3p Canoe) 3:00:00 [4] 10.0 mi (3.3 mph)
shoes: Adidas Climacool

Boat was tippy and hard to turn. Earl and Julia did a great job of reading the water though and we didn't have to get out and push over any ledges.

1 CP was in on an island in the middle of a fishing pond alongside the river. Our collegiate swimmer Julia got it for us and came back covered in grass.
4 PM

Orienteering race 4:00:00 [4] 10.0 mi (24:00 / mi) +3658ft 17:50 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

Second trek.
Forgot the passport in my old shorts at TA. Luckily realized it in the first 300m. Basically climbed the ridge, ran along it, and then descended. Collected several point off the trail along the way. Contour lines along the ridge were hard to read making it hard to know exactly where on the ridge we were.

Finished just before dark. Earl was starting to have trouble keeping his energy up.
9 PM

Mountain Biking race 7:00:00 [4] 15.8 mi (2.3 mph) +2415ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro IV

Most of the points were within 200m of the trail. One required a 300ft off bike climb. Another required a swim to an island, which Julia did again.

Surprisingly the climb to the ridge was mostly rideable except for maybe the last km. Additionally, we had to mostly walk the first km along the ridge.

We had trouble with one CP that took us probably close to 3 hours to find. First off we didn't have a bike odometer. This would have been helpful along the ridge. We started a quick search about 1 km early. Fortunately, a short course team coming up behind us did and helped us get closer to the approximate location of the hillside CP. We got to the right hilltop before the CP but when we tried to attack I was using the scale from a previous map and getting too short a distance. In addition, the dropoff from the hilltop was in actuality 80ft but the map was only showing one 32ft contour line.
We searched a 250m stretch of hillside up to the point until we realized where we were. Even then it didn't quite seem right but then finally pieced together our mistakes which made it logical.

The one benefit to hanging around for so long was Earl rejuvenated a lot.

Clearing the advanced course. Nav was strong.

Had trouble with the first control. Clue was creek but it was placed in some bushes about 10m off the creek (but still in the reentrant).

Interesting course dichotomy. Started on broad flat features and finished on steep reentrants. Probably should have come down Larkspur instead of climbing to Lady Slipper for CP 11

Note

Spent the week in Williamsburg with the family. Was hoping to get in a run or two at some nearby trails as well as a trip or two to the gym but I was pretty wasted every night and morning. Busy days with lots of fun activities and often times pushing the double stroller around. Think this actually took quite a bit out of me.

Pre vacation run with the dogs.
Steady rain with some downpours sprinkled in. About a half inch fell during the run. Very wet conditions. It was actually not probable to rain. Was slowed down from the rain and a little tired from yesterday.

Usually I enjoy rain runs and while I did this one it was more a reminder of all the rain we were going to get on our vacation and adding insult to injury

Orienteering race 2:00:00 [4] 4.44 mi (27:02 / mi) +264ft 25:35 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

Small Ocourse from Yates Place. Attacked early for the first CP but realized it pretty much right away and adjusted. Had trouble with the second CP. A combination of the unmapped trails and just missing a mapped road. Realized we were on the wrong road but had to move slowly to track ourselves and eventually find the right trail back up to the control. Lost a few minutes for sure. Should have taken the unmapped trail we tried to avoid as it just led directly to the CP.

Took it slow to the next CP to track ourselves along the unmapped trail. Then moved quicker through the terrain and the mapped road to the last CP and the TA.
2 AM

Mountain Biking race 1:51:00 [4] 12.4 mi (6.7 mph) +933ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro IV

Chose to get the 3 optional CPs on the bike with a short trek to each of them on our way back to the finish. First control was not much of a problem. Found a trail that took us most of the way.

When we stopped for the second and third controls we found a road that looked like it might take us to one of them. It took us to the right spur and ended in a clearing. There was a streamer from the race hanging in the clearing but no control. Everyway out of the clearing was through thick forest. Mark and I both left the clearing heading further down the spur where we thought the control might be (Turns out it was plotted 100m further down). We weren't 100% confident we were in the right spot but it seemed right. We continued down what seemed to be the spur but until it dropped off. We didn't see the control but it was pretty thick as mentioned.

We decided to get the other control and try to reattack from the bottom. We did that. Our attack was sidehilling up a steep heavily vegetated slope. Apparently (and not surprisingly) we weren't able to hold our bearing and didn't climb the slope as fast as we should have. We started coming across terrain features that just didn't make sense though even assuming we did just as expected we might have. We traveled for a little bit further and then decided to bail north back to the road continuing to see a lot of terrain we didn't think made sense even assuming we had done what we did.

We climbed back up the road basically to the bikes and decided to reattack the control from the hilltop. We did this and ended up right back at the clearing. Turns out the clearing was a bit too early but I was just assuming our bearing was a bit off. We should have tried checking past the clearing again.

At this point we assumed the control must have been gone and left on the road back to our bikes. Fortunately we heard CP0 schwacking their way into the same CP. We told them our story and asked if we could follow them (and help them) to see if we could find it. They didn't have luck either and wandered a bit around the spur/clearing looking for the CP as well. At that point we decided to leave. They searched a bit more, got the other CP and also tried another reattack, all without any luck.

RDs said it was just further down the spur. Must have just been too thick for us to see the first time. Would have been good if we had tried again on our second visit for good measure. Don't feel two bad about leaving considering what we did, the information available, and the additional effort from CP0. As we walked back to the bikes Mark scared a Rattlesnake off the trail

After this it was pretty much a straightforward ride back to the finish with 2 CPs along the way in Badin OHV park just off the gravel road.

Orienteering race 2:30:00 [4] 4.7 mi (31:55 / mi) +500ft 29:00 / mi

Trekking during bike. Primarily for the point we couldn't find.

Adventure Racing race 16:16:00 [0]

Uwharrie 18hr w/Mark as TanZ Navigation

Weather was good, not too hot. Mostly night race with clear skies but no moon. Course looked like it might be short but we didn't know exactly how long the orienteering course was going to be.

We got a small lead over CP0 during the prologue. The lead remained small until the OCourse when we were able to pull away a little bit more. We had major issues with one CP which seemed like it might have been missing. After CP0 arrived and had trouble too we dropped it and finished.

Prologue run

Swimming race 15:00 [4] 0.35 mi (42:53 / mi)

Prologue swim
Mark and I were able to swim out front of everybody and get a little bit of a lead that we would be able to maintain the rest of the race.

Mountain Biking race 2:25:00 [4] 15.58 mi (6.4 mph) +1350ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro IV

Mountain Bike Ride through Badin Loke OHV area. First trail we got to was a horse trail that was chewed up and rocky. It was an out and back anyway so we dropped the bikes and ran.

After getting back on the bikes misremembered the map and took us around a bit to the next trail. We also tried to get to 4 more efficiently but missed the trail we needed and/or drew it on the map wrong. Still kept our 5 min lead over CP0.

Tried to save some time and effort going from 6 to 7 by schwacking down the mountain. Started clear but got thick towards the bottom and we couldn't get back to the trail. Definitely didn't save time and probably lost another 5 minutes.

Came into the paddle TA still 5 mins in front of CP0

Straightforward paddle. 3 small out and back sections and then finished across the river/reservoir. Some motorboats to contend with but not a big deal. CP0 was about 5-10min back on each of the out and backs.
7 PM

Orienteering race 3:30:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro

Long Orienteering Course set by CoC. Good map but contour lines were thin and light which made reading them as it got dark harder. We were able to get a good bit in before dark which made a big difference. We moved quickly in the daylight to get in as much as we could. Strategy after dark was much more conservative (sometimes maybe a bit too much). I made one small error and thought we got to the point early. Lost maybe 2 min. Otherwise a clean course.

We did see CP0 as we made a looped back across one part of the course. They were still about 5-10 min back.
11 PM

Paddling (2p Canoe) 30:00 [3] 1.25 mi (2.5 mph)

Paddle back across the river/reservoir to our bikes in the dark. Navigation was easy so no problems.

Road Biking race 30:00 [4] 4.88 mi (9.8 mph) +520ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro IV

After reassembling our gear. Getting everything we needed out of our gear drop and leaving everything we could we rode to the final TA at Yates Place. Straightforward ride.
