Note

Partial nail removal was much less painful than the last full nail removal (which was accompanied by a broken toe). No pain meds needed (not even OTC).

River Ride
Felt slow on the climbs but strong otherwise. Just missed sneaking by a train at the end of Norris Run but would have had to be 2 min faster to not get stuck on Big Falls either. Only had to wait 2 min. Even still my total time was faster than the last time I did this exact ride. A little windy today.

Second ride on the Viathon.

Warmish weather. A little wetter than I expected it might be but not too bad. Shortly into the ride the derailleur cage got stuck. I stopped but found no stick. It took me a while to realize the chain was stuck off the cage wheel. Fixed that and kept riding. Later realized in my granny gear the cage was catching the wheel and my adjustment was off. It wasn't from cable stretch because it was too tight. Had to tighten it 1 gear more to be usable for the rest of the ride.

Also ran into a group of about 40 Sawyer's along PC. Had to stop and get cleared to keep going after each small group. Avoided the last section of PC on the way back to save everyone the trouble.

Back to the Podiatrist again for my R Big Toe. Thought he might need to pull it again and was considering cauterizing it.

He said the nail may not be damaged so I opted to just drain it and leave it for now. That won't solve any major problems but pulling it and/or cauterizing it doesn't guarantee to solve any of those problems either. I'll wait to try/consider cauterizing when the nail has to be pulled anyway.

Wildcat Course Clearing

On my drive in I left a water bottle at CP 200 and the intersection near your water stop. I ended up stopping in both dining halls as I passed by them to refill my bottle each time.

I was a little over-cautious at 93. I started seeing the cliffs and was thinking the control could have been just above the cliffs. Once I got to the top though it was easy to see the reentrant and I just walked down it. Could have stayed on the roadbed and saved a lot of time though. I was just concerned because others had trouble here.

45 wasn't as clean as I would have liked. My bearing got thrown off because there was a clearing I passed through below 91 that I thought was the mapped clearing but it wasn't. Took me until I got back to the road above the trail to figure out what happened. Considered taking the road all the way around to the south and I think that might have been the better choice.

Got to the water stop 10 min ahead of time and 1k more than estimated.

Stayed high from 72 to 94. I didn't realize that I could have taken the trail but my route was pretty clean and I think better anyway. There was an old roadbed along the spur. Without that the trail would have been better.

Missed 84 a little low. Looks like it was also placed a little high. I would have missed it either way. I tried to utilize the trail a little and it sucked me too far down the spur.

Misread the circle and the clue for 95 and spent 15 minutes looking for it. It was very well hidden in a ditch.

Missed 82 the first time by.

Got to water stop 200 right at 5 hours and 2k over total distance estimate.

Nothing unexpected around camp or on my inner loop. Figured I'd make up some time on the last section as it was a lot of road/trail but I was really slowing down. Adding the O course would have easily added 1 hour (probably more) to my time. I think CCW at the Start would have been the better way to go. Seemingly less big climbs. Starting with the road running may have been faster as well. I think for the sake of me dropping controls to pick up by car this might have worked better though.

Overall an interesting place to navigate. A lot of trails and things to use for navigation. There seemed to be a lot of trail/road running, maybe too much. Definitely not a place to come for a true wilderness experience but still fun and tough. The 40ft contours adds some difficulty too. I do think this would be an AMAZING place for a big bike nav or bike leg. I think there were more briars than I am used to but otherwise, the woods were generally clear enough that you didn't get upset that vegetation isn't mapped.

Have some pain in my RBig Toe. LBig Toe seems ok but was uncomfortable at times.

Had some pain on the side of my L Big Toe. Dr said trimming the corner might do the trick as the nail mostly looks good except for a couple mm along the entire end of it. Hopefully that will grow out and everything else will be fine.

45F and light rain for the first half. Trails were sloppy.
Looking for hills. Legs felt good. Didn't get tired until the hills on the ridge run back to Beauty. Still felt like I could open it up on flatter sections though.
Planned loop was short again so I started an out and back to the fire circle but decided to drop down Slim Jim when I got there instead. Added elevation was good but made the run a bit longer than I was shooting for. Slim Jim was pretty runnable.

38F. Still a bit wet from all the rain. Creeks were flowing.
Got a cramp in my left calf at about mile 10 that lasted the rest of the run.
My pace was a bit faster than planned so I added a small out and back at the end.

Long run with some climbs. Pace was decent but mostly just tiring for my legs on the climbs. Definitely something to improve. Temps were warm with some wind. Finished just as it was getting dark.
