JHI relay, 4th (forgot to start garmin)
My 1st and 2nd legs both thought they had bad runs but Pippa came back 1st and Hannah handed over to me in 3rd (just over a minute down on 2 Scottish teams) so as far as I'm concerned they put me in a great position, I went out really hard at the start, nailed the first 3 controls and caught the Scots on the way to 4 but I was so focused on catching them I lost contact and I probably distracted them because we all messed it up, then in an attempt to pull away I messed up 5 and took them both with me so between those 2 controls we lost a LOT of time, the advantage of this was that it allowed Alice to catch up (started about a minute behind me), I then led for the rest of the course until the 3rd last control where the other 3 had a different gaffle to me, I knew what I was doing but I turned around and saw them all punching a control, I knew it wasn't mine so I don't know what I was thinking but I ran back to it, letting them all past me so in one moment of complete and utter stupidity I had gone from 1st to 4th, the next leg was very short and the run-in basically started from the 2nd last control so there was no time to catch up. Gutted.
Scotland won the relays by enough to take the over all trophy for the first time since 2002(?) by just 2 points, they had a strong team and all credit to them for some great relay performances but really disappointing for the English team, so many things went wrong on the day and if any one of those things had gone differently we could have won. Definitely feel responsible as I lost 3 positions right at the end, I had told some of the younger members of the team to ignore everyone else and be confident enough to go to the right control but I couldn't even do it myself and I should know better. 48 hours later and I'm still kicking myself, I don't know why it's bothering me so much.
