Lake District Mountain Trial - Short

Always planned on having a go at the mountain trial. The short billed as 12k seemed like a good idea and the pairs option only let us do short anyway.
S-1. Obvious start straight up the band then decided on the way at which point to peel off to grunting gill. Lots of different route choice evident. We ended up messing about in the crags. Should've stayed on path and took the hit going down and back up. Best way was to follow contours and go north of crags but nav was beyond me. Especially that early on. Girl with blue fleece running in team went good way. They were 100mts ahead.
1-2. Plan was to rejoin path and head towards Bowfell then not lose much height by going round Ore gap. Pretty much spot on for that one.
2-3. Run down the spur to join stream. Looked simple enough but dropped off a bit too early and ended up having to redirect.
3-4. Contour up to Swinsty gill then changed mind and carried on to Stonesty gill because the climb was too steep. Overtook blue fleece then they overtook us again by the top near little stand. Went too early on the control feature but soon corrected and hit the manned control. Blue fleece appeared just after us. Must've gone wrong.
4-5. Henry headed off wrong side of Cold Pike but quickly corrected. dropped down through the bog and take more direct route. Didn't lose any time.
5-6. Looked tricky on the map - and it was. Tried to keep level height but Henry drifted left towards crags. Tried to call him back but was having none of it. Mistook the red dotted line for a visible path. Ended up clambering down and got caught by blue fleece again. Missed the actual control circle but Henry relocated well and we found control well enough. lost between 5-10 minutes.
6-7. Steep downhill to what looked obvious. Sheep fold. Got to sheep fold then looked at description - Bridge, South side. Bugger. Blue fleece already at the bridge. Decent was sketchy. On my arse a lot. found the VJ XTRMs limits. Lost maybe 3 minutes.
7-8. Path run to finish. Breathing wheezy. Just a few seconds behind blue fleece. They started 2 minutes ahead of us.

Went and downloaded. 7/8. As per usual then. Around bottom of the results. Sat about and ate free chilli then went home.

Checked results to find we got 2nd pair and 2x £15 Bland vouchers arrived in post on Tuesday.
Blue fleece turned out to be Helene Diamantides and her daughter so pretty pleased with that considering I'm full of cold.
