L Lower Leg, Shin Splints

2006-01-17 – 2006-09-01

Grade: 1

Strange pain in lower left shin - turns out it's a form of shin splint (medial tibial stress syndrome) most likely due to overpronation and no support from shoes. Had the same injury during the second half of last term, where it was worst on hard (tarmac) surfaces, but it's hardly noticeable when orienteering, probably due to the uneven terrain. Rested for 5 weeks over Christmas which helped to a certain extent, but now it's come back again pretty quickly and have been to see the physio who's come up with this diagnosis.

Update April '06 - the injury is still there in a mild form, and can get upset if I run on hard surfaces, so I'm staying clear of the roads for now. Doesn't hurt at all when running in terrain. Unfortunately I don't think it's cleared up completely - with this being peak orienteering season over here and lots of important races around I haven't been able to rest it up as much as I would have liked. Not going to up the training much beyond 3 running sessions a week, and go out on the bike a bit more perhaps.

Update May '06 - started to feel injury while orienteering during 0007 weekend, made the decision to stop running for the rest of this term - I'll try to give it 2 months or so and if it hasn't gone by then there's something more serious wrong. At the moment the planned comeback is the TVOC Summer Series, Bloom Wood on the 28th June.
