Rocky Mountain 1000 Day: Red 1

Cristina

1. +00:15Not uphill, so I had some energy. Got near the control sooner than I expected and was confused - thought I had veered way left and had lots to go, but it was right down the reentrant on my left.
2. Feeling good so far. I like these short legs to start off.
3. Ditto. Having a good start like this gets me in a good mindset - easy to concentrate, and it allows me to move faster.
4. First leg involving any thinking - though not much. Cruised down past the stream and up the big reentrant. Easy to spot features out here.
5. +00:10Already learned how much easier the open yellow was to run in over the sagebrush, so ran down the nose and up the small reentrant left of the rock features. Drifted a little right towards the trees early, but quickly corrected.
6. Up the reentrant, feeling extra good by now.
7. +00:15A little shaky on this leg. Meant to drop down to the trail near the bottom of the hill, but sort of sidehilled gradually losing elevation instead. Plus, there were some other cow paths crossing and I couldn't be sure I'd get to the right one, so I ended up just sort of aiming for the massive rocks and up the reentrant. Sort of lucky that I wasn't too far off with my blind wander.
8. Stayed low to the left of the line, but never hitting the bit of trail leading up to the large track. Hit the track just before the nose with the trees across from the boulders and then jumped off cutting over the open spur and straight into the opposite side reentrant. No problems, feeling good again.
9. +00:20Started off a bit right and overcorrected to the left, but the reentrant was long enough to catch me.
10. +00:15Basically went straight on this one, keeping decent contact. First just right of the line in the open yellow, the left for the same. Passed to the right of the two rock lumps to be on the line, but veered too far left. Sort of silly. But I could see the woody reentrant on my right and quickly corrected.
11. +02:00Passed right by this one to the right, and then dropped down to another cliff. Luckily this one had some green stuff next to it, making it easy to identify But a fair bit of wandering and standing trying to figure this one out, especially since I had just been where it was. Maybe a better route would have been left of the line, flatter.
12. Thankfully no problems, sort of losing concentration here.
13. +03:30...and here it was totally gone. Drifted far let of the line and noticed all these tree patches, but never really stopped to figure out why that didn't match up. Ended up across the large reentrant from the rock line of 14, but it took me a minute to figure that out. Then, once I had figured it out, it was very tough to convince my brain to go in the right direction. A real compass/mind battle. Yuck.
14. +00:30I'd stared at these rock features enough to know where to go. Still, undershot the feature and went up around the left side.
15. +00:30Took the far right route, around all the rock features and up the first big reentrant. Took forever to go up the hill, though any route would involve the same climb. Not sure that the slightly left route would have been better, as my face would have been in the map the whole time, moving slowly. But the far left route, to the road, would probably have worked well, since the climb was gradual and I could go on autopilot. A little bobble at the top, lured by the other control on the bare rock.
16. Sort of dazed at this point - think the hill took it out of me, but glad to be almost done.
17. This leg felt like an eternity. I even walked a bit of it, when the slope was slightly uphill.
F. No spunk.
