Race Evaluation

DVOA Crows Nest Preserve-French Creek: Red

Wyatt

1. A bit right of line to field edge - no more runnable than field :( Keeping an eye for bend saw bag, in and out same way
2. +00:15Up to the field bend, then a little low across the field, hitting the while woods a bit low, but not seeing the depression or pit, but then noticing a flat area behind a fallen tree and looped around to it - now see the veg-mapping of the downed tree.
3.
4. Diagonal through fields, but around a bit of while near the end. Rocky pit/dirt-road offset being wrong was a sign of possible mapping offset challenges ahead
5. +01:00Bearing, but too loose at start, relying on hillside a bit. Vegetation awful for 'white' woods - rose strands galore. Tried to correct a bit, but never did notice the depressions I was hoping to guide me in. Saw a big depression, 'oh a pit', by 5, and came back in from there
6. +00:30Planned to go high, then drop along the line of cliffs, but dropped one too early. Really rough/rocky area - tough on my weak ankle, esp. w/rose thorns around
7. Straight. 1st half of leg horribly slow getting stuck on tons of stuff, and ankle to weak to just hurl myself and hope
8. +01:00A bit L of line, trying, unsurely to follow vague trails - finally noticed some were stone walls and pushed to those (could've pushed hard to those from the start if I'd noticed them. Followed the edge of the rugged rocks SE (unsure at one point, when crossed an unmapped patch of just barely lesser rocks), but then the indistinct trail showed up. Followed that till it faded. Couldn't make any sense of the rocks and green to my left at that point, so just took a compass/pace in from that point, noticing the bag just ahead on the left of my line, right on pace count.
9. +00:45Diagonal up, trail run (pretty good trail, unlike the earlier indistincts), cut across to HS trail. Off 2nd bend (first came up awfully quick). Bearing/flat in, thinking I was aiming low to be able to bounce off the stream if I didn't see the bag on my left. Hit the dot knoll 75m W of bag, and saw the knoll/rootstock the bag was on - but thought it was a knoll. Noticed the two E/W dot knolls S of control (where I thought I'd been aming off), and headed up to the visible rootstock. No bag. Oh, maybe it's this one (100m NW of bag), if so then - oh, I see it...
10. +00:30Up to trail, to ridge line, then right turn. Surprised by trail being quite distinct, and by contours suggesting I was on the S-side of the hill for quite a while before crossing over to the saddle (I wonder what the contours are from? And/or is there an offset in the trail mapping?), then down from 2nd bend. Across rd. barely could see the field to L, then saw marsh, and diagonalled down, getting sucked in to the fallen tree control a bit early (in a quite marshy 'ditch'). Confused a bit by overprint obscuring the ditch continuing, then decided the ditch was just mapped wrong, and headed off from the rootstock NE to find my bag
11. Diagonal bail out (a bit slow), then hammer up hill to 11. First place since 3-4 where I could push full-hard for a while w/o ankle limits.
F. +00:02Down in, following the flags - perhaps should've cut the corner as AJ got me by 4 secs. Also need a stronger ankle.

Total Time Lost - 00:04:02
