| 1. | jogging up the hill with the pack, looking at the map - decided to take the right fork on 13 and to skip 4 here... | ||||||

| 3. | +00:15 | tried to take a small short cut from the field to the control, but got caught on the barbed wire, developing a large bloodstain on my back.... | |||||
| 4. | decided to skip - surprised no one else in the pack went with me. | ||||||
| 5. | +04:00 | paid dearly for early skip by missing this control badly - went too low and far to the east of the control after attacking from the corner of the field... saw joe b. and realized how far off i was | |||||
| 6. | frustrated after missing 5, i tried to catch up to the pack of Clem, Ed White, John Fredrickson, and some other people...ran down, following some people, then realised they were cadets and had to start orienteering by myself. crossed the swamp in the middle of the green, but came straight to the control. Clem punches behind me. | ||||||
| 7. | +06:00 | run up to the trail with Clem, but decide to attack off the first stone wall. Bad idea! Taking John F. with me, I badly miss the control and have to relocate again off the trail. | |||||
| 8. | now, there is no hope of catching the pack - i've already skipped and am far behind... decide to push it from here and see if i can make up any ground. spike this one. | ||||||
| 9. | run towards the control, John F. still with me, using a string of people to navigate. Pass George Walker, Glen Tryson, Pavlina (for the 1st time). | ||||||
| 10. | run with John and Carl Childs, who i last saw coming back to 1 after missing it - he must also be trying to catch the pack | ||||||

| 12. | John and I catch up to a long string of people heading up to 12 - Bernie, Jeff Saeger are here... | ||||||
| 13. | take the right fork and catch up to Pam James, Tim Parson, Steve Olafsen, Ross Smith...feel good but realise they all have a skip left. | ||||||
| 14. | +00:45 | slowly walk up the field and jog up the trail. at the trail junction, Pam, Tim, and Ross all turn right, skipping 14. i am starting to feel tired and walk up the hill towards 14. i miss it low and to the right, and am caught by Bernie, Jeff, John, Carl... | |||||
| 15. | thinking that all of the people i am with will skip 15, i ignore them and cut through the green and find the tiny east-west trail. coming into 15, i'm surprised to see Carl and John with me. | ||||||
| 16. | run straight south, catching Pavlina for the second time, and punching with her, Carl, and John. | ||||||
| 17. | lead the small pack down the trail and cut off across the swamp towards the next trail. punch just ahead of Steve Olafsen and John. | ||||||
| 18. | +00:45 | poor route choice! getting progressively tired, i go back to the small trail and take it to the large trail - poor choice both because i didnt run the road and because i didnt cut through the woods to the large trail. see Steve O. and John well ahead of me down the trail. John told me that he's skipping 18, so i dont expect to see him again. catch Steve at the control | |||||
| 19. | see Christian Schneider in front of me and become excited to be catching more people (for the second time!) come into control with him and Bernie. hoping not to be beaten by the junior team coach, i ask Bernie if he has seen Jeff. he says Jeff is ahead of us. | ||||||
| 20. | sprinting to 20 with Christian and Bernie, we see Jeff coming back towards 19 - yes! punch 20 with Alar. | ||||||
| 21. | am feeling very tired by now, but slog along the swamp and then up the hill towards the control | ||||||
| 22. | moving very slowly across the hill, i am again caught by Bernie, Christian, and Jeff. we also run into John F., who seemed pretty lost. punch 22 right behind John and realise it'll be a painful sprint all the way back | ||||||
| 23. | +00:10 | go too far right around the swamp, running with John and crawl up the hill in the middle of the pack - Christian and John punch in front and go straight. Jeff goes after them. Mihai, who seemed to appear out of nowhere, punches just ahead of me and goes right on the trail. I follow him. Another fatal choice! | |||||
| F. | +00:20 | absolutely dead walking up the hill and am passed by Mihai and Jeff and Bernie. Gather up last energy in the finish chute and pass Bernie and battle Jeff, but to no avail. 20th place finish - 109:55. A fun billygoat, though somewhat disappointing performance for me. Still, a wonderful day and a very enjoyable course! |
