1. | Took the trail around and started to look a bit low and left but another guy came running at my from higher on my right and then pointed back.
2. | A Canadian(?) Blue course runner whom I started the same time with popped out behind me as I got started. I didn't have the strength to run fast. He passed but I got across the reentrants better somehow and was close behind. I cut left where he did and new just where to go. He floundered a bit so I got to my control before him.
3. | +00:20 | I ran out with the Blue course runner from #2 close behind. He passed. I sought to aim right at it but ened-up left and had to come back.
4. | +01:20 | Like others, I crossed the road expecting to go around the green across from the T-intersection but it looked runnable--I went straight and ran parallel to the fence then into the field. I flubbed it, looking at the building on the left and even thinking I'd gone too far but kept going anyway. When I cut right and it wasn't there, I knew just what I'd done and came back.
5. | I went straight south into the field and around the green to the road. There, I went north and came off the parking area. Crossing the reentrant and hitting the trail, I cut right as the trail bent and the ridge ran out
6. | Out to the trail, then in off the bend.
7. | South to the trail, then I paused. I almost made a mistake to not go up to the ridgge;
8. | +01:30 | I ran along the left side of the deep reentrant using the trail a lot. As the reentrant bent left, I descended and crossed. Going up, I struggled for a foothold and at one point slid back down about 15ft. Somehow I got up the steep wall and into a ditch. At the top, I went straight thinking I was in the right ditch but I'd climbed early. I ran left and hit the control over 100m away. I should have climbed elsewhere.
9. | I went fairly straight but drifted right a bit in the saplings. I relocated on the disturbed ground and crossed into nicer woods. I crossed a moderate reentrant, knew where I was but cut right to get around some deadfall ahead. I noticed Spike in the area. I ran right past his control on a rootstock, then cut left to use the open woods to my control.
10. | I think this was fairly straight.
11. | Oops. I drifted left, trying to stay ahead of Spike rather than watch my compass. When I got to a spur, I crossed the gully and turned left to go the next reentrant. I realized I'd goofed once there and turned around. I saw Spike and Anna heading into a reentrant. I crossed one headed to the same place and the control.
12. | Leaving 11, Spike and Anna were ahead of me. At first, they cut across the reentrants deeper than I did, then headed for the trail. I cut across eventually hitting the trail before the control.
13. | +01:00 | I went fairly straight though I drifted right a bit. The saplings and marshy ground kept me watching where to step rather than reading my map. I did pay attention to the compass. Spike had gone much further to the right than I did. I guess he was headed to the trail or some better woods. I had been closing in on Spike near the end, but as he came in ahead from my right, I focused more on cathing him than noticing that there was a control to punch before the finish. I ran to the finish and caught my breath. While Spike was talking to someone else, I looked at my map and noticed that I had not punched the GO control. I ran back to the tree that I had passed earlier and punched.
F. | I didn't muster a blazing finish. |
