Race Evaluation

2001 Billygoat Run:

levitin

1. Followed pack; didn't cut corner on the trail.
2. Not navigating yet, but at least I know where we are and the map is folded right.
3. At some point here, joined Scott Turner.
4.
5. En route, suggested skipping 5. Scott agreed, having had bad results at the Troll Cup near this region.
6. On the trail to 6 with Scott and Megan Donahue, I tripped and fell. We encountered people arriving at 6 who came from the right (#5), and I thought they were the same ones we had seen go *to* #5, so at the time I thought our skip had been a bad choice. I haven't seen anybody's splits to back up this impression, so maybe I was just oxygen-deprived at the time.
7. Hesitated
Should have been much faster, since it looks so easy. But I was a bit tired at this point.
8. Stayed high. Saw JJ coming in while we were munching cookies. What was he doing still here? Maybe our skip *did* put us ahead, but I thought it had been a waste.
9. stayed S of the distinct tree.
10.
11.
12. Found the indistinct path along the purple line; then ran the trail around to the N.
13. JJ passed us again while we were contouring N.
14.
15. Did not follow plan
Bad compass work
Hit the water before the trail, so I must have left the control slightly pointed wrong. At the path fork, I went E intending to attack from the pond, but didn't ID this feature clearly. Lost Scott and was solo for a while.
16. Did not read control description
Lacked confidence
Got confused by the recreational control NW of the spur.
17. Bad route choice
Went S of the pond, through the finish, past the start triangle.
18. I think I saw Mihai passing me en route to 18, moving very quickly. Knew I had to fix my position because I couldn't keep up with him. Relocated at the reentrant NE of the flag.
19. Bad compass work
Confused parallel features
Another trail run, again not cutting the corner, turning W after the wall junction. I was aiming for the stream junction en route, but must have erred N because I encountered the 3 boulders and relocated for certain at the reentrant just N of the flag. Eric Smith caught me here and was in sight until the end.
20. I briefly considered splitting the marshes but took the trails instead. Left at the junction, ticked off the wall end and found the flag. Eric was moving somewhat more cautiously, but at this point I could see the buffalo tracks.
21. Ticked off the water features, staying low near the swamp.
22. N to the trail running NW, then NE, crossed the stream between the ponds, and followed the path. I didn't notice that the path was mapped until afterward. Eric was leading into 22.
23. Eric led most of the way but I attacked more directly and punched first.
F. Outran Eric to the finish, coming in from the beach.
