Race Evaluation

2001 Billygoat Run:

Charlie

1. Following Peter, keeping my glasses up so I could run, only the very slightest map contact. At one point I thought we had gone too far, so I flipped down my glasses and realized I had been following the line to #19.
2. Following again, and again confused because I was looking at the wrong line on the map, so I thought we had much further to go.
3. Now I'm reading the map ok, Peter is a bit ahead, and Mark D. is in front of me also.
4.
5. Skip
6. Leaving 4 I fell hard and lost contact with Peter, Peggy and Mark. Decided to skip 5 and got passed by Bernie on the trail run.
7. Picked up Mark again, and not too far behind Rick DeWitt
8. Took the trail down below and up the stairs. Got to see a big crowd leaving 8 on my way in, including Peter. Mark went up top and we got there together.
9. Across the bridge, then angled left over to the main E-W road, up there behind Mark and Charlie Leonard. Cut in just W of #18 and read the terrain perfectly in. Mark and Charlie were farther off to the left and I didn't see them. J-J showed up just after I punched (not having skipped).
10. Got a little flustered, stopped a little soon. Pavi and J-J passed me.
11. Behind Pavi and Charlie L.
12. +02:00Behind Pavi and Charlie, but they pull away. cut across the first trail to the second. I see them coming back out when I cut in, but miss the control too high and too far. After a bit I turn and see Megan Donohue heading back out after punching, and Mark, too. Find it and leave in the company of J-J.
13. Kinda slow, Mark is to my left, as I went up to the top and ran the ridge. Joe Mok is in front of me and skips 14
14. With Mark and J-J, across the streamlet and down the long spur.
15. Fight out to the trail - crossed the stream, which was a bad idea. By the time I get there, Megan and J-J are out of sight, and I'm chasing Mark. He doesn't look like he's going very fast, but he's going faster than I am. Take the left fork and head in by the little pond. Easy.
16. Scott Turner and I head left to the trail, while Mark goes along the ridge line. Mark & I get there together.
17. West to the trail, then across the bridge and past the start. When the trail starts to head down, head west to the control. Behind Scott and in front of Mark.
18. Mostly west across the reentrant, then S along the contour, mostly walking, following Scott. When I get to the little reentrant N of the control I run by Scott and Phil Bricker into the control.
19. With those two, out to the trail, W to the Junction, S on trail to near the second stone wall, angle in. Scott and I go straight, Phil around low, but all get there together.
20. E to the trail, lose track of Scott. After a while Phil stops, then cuts through the woods. I stay on the trail all the way to the junction W of the control, then down to the stone wall with its N end near the bag. Easy.
21. Along the marsh. At the stream I slip on a rock and get a spasm in my back, but shake it off. Nadim goes cruising by at high speed. He gets off a bit, though, as he comes into the control from a different angle at the same time.
22. I plan to cross the stream and the bridge again, but drift up the hill following Nadim. Bad Idea. When I get out to the trail I see Mark 50 m ahead and motoring. Once I cross the bridge and get on the twisty trail, Mark is out of sight.
23.
F. Crash hard 30 m from the end, cramping in my hamstring and calf. Fortunately, I can get up again and hobble in. Awfully hard, I think. Seems like the most beat I felt after a goat since '84.
