Race Evaluation

Prince William Forest Training: Blue

tdgood

1. Although I was one of the first ready to run I let the people likely to take longer go first. Started 2 minutes behind Tim Good and 2 minutes in front of Nadim. Started off down the trail having a tough time reading the map. Finally had to stop and look as I kept wanting to go the wrong direction. Finally took the trail to the bridge and then left the trail. Once I left the trail all was well again and I navigated using contours to the control. As I approached I saw Michael and Peggy running away. I just assumed they were leaving but as I got to the reentrant there was no control and peggy and michael were returning. Control was mishung. Although we had spread out at the start we all met up at the first control. I moved the control to the correct spot so Nadim could find it. He was already there when I got back. We waited a little while then started again.
2. Straight lined it but ended up way to far left. I always hit this area way to far left. I think it map be mapped wrong. Oh well. Having been here before I didn't waste any time correcting.
3. Straight. Dave and Heidi just in front of me.
4. Passed Heidi. Dave was staying lower while I was cutting up more to the road. Hit the road by the parking area and ran up it to the correct cut in spot. Michael now ahead of me and he continued farther down the road. Ran down the spur to the reentrant but there wasn't a rock or a control there. Oh well. Dave goes running by saying it is farther on. He was right but ignored him at the time. Control was much farther up than expected and Dave and I approached from the low side.
5. Dave starte out straight. I angled more north to go by the rocks along the stream. Probably added an extra zig now that I look at it that wasn't needed. Crossed last stream by other set of rocks, right on the money. Up hill to reentrant.
6. Climbed right away and aproached from the high side to avoid up/down climb. Tom Carr right with me.
7. Dropped immediately to the stream to look for a place to cross. Found a big pile up of logs and crossed with Tom right behind me. Ran across the flat plain to the reentrant with the trail.
8. Straightish. Map is bad. It shows a reentrant when it really should be just a ditch/gully.
9. Nothing to do but straight line it keep track of reentants. No problem navigating but getting tired of climb.
10. Straight. Woods good enough that I decided to avoid the road. Got a little thick just before the control but mostely pretty good running.
11. Road to road to bridge. I hung this control so had no problems.
12. I also hung this control so I spiked it of course.
13. Up across the spur and angle over to the correct reentrant.
14. Saw Valerie and Kris as I was leaving the control. Straight. Got to the reentrant but didn't see any control/streamers to ran on by to the next broad one. Touched the huge set of streamers but then realized it didn't look right. Spent some time analyzing that it was me and not just the map being bad. It was me. Ran over the correct reentrant again. Streamers were hung lower than it should have been so I missed them the first time.
15. straight
16. straight
17. Along stream, to correct reentrant. Up reentrant to broad hill then wandered around looking for a pit. Found one full of water. Went over to the other way and there was pit with streamers. Ran on but there was conjecture that these may not have been the corrrect pits even though that was were the streamers were.
18. down reentrant then straight.
19. Straight. Passed to the left of the buildings.
20. Up by the finish to the last control.
F. Don't know where the official finish line was so stopped watch at the bathrooms.
