Race Evaluation

Prince William Forest Training: Blue

TimGood

1. Still hurting from the race yesterday and tired from hanging bags so planning on a slow even pace today. One of the later starters so lost the least time on the mishung control. Got to the reentrant just behind Ted and joined the pack of earlier starters looking for it. Dave called us over to where the control was.
2. Figured I would be caught by everyone later so did not wait around at 2. Assume there was some delays added to space people back out. Straight line and had no problem. Occasional glances of Tom up ahead.
3. Straight up to the clearing but could not see the knoll because of the brush covering it. Peggy came into the clearing and went right to it.
4. More tired than I thought. Peggy just ran away from me. - on the road. Ran out the high ground and down to the control.
5. Ted and Dave came up from the bottom as I was leaving 4. They passed me on the uphill after the stream. I got to far south and into the reentrants instead of along the top where I should have been. Kept Dave and Ted in sight until just before the control. Then did not see the control and went past it. Michael caught me and passed me as I went all the way to the trail before turning back.
6. A better job staying high this time but no energy for any uphills and walking more and more. Came out in the reentrant to the W but did not waste much time realizing it was the wrong one.
7. Nadim passed me just before the stream. We both crossed on the log. He ran away on the uphill. Probably should have stuck with my orginal plan to stay on the trail by the stream and come up from below. I was slow going over the spur and came out way off line and short.
8. Straight. Looking ahead the rest of the course looks to be relatively easy. I assume everyone else will fly thru it while I am walking.
9. To much up and down
10. Consider the road and in an actual race would have taken it, but this is training and the woods are mostly open. Go straight.
11. Road this time until crossing the stream on the bridge.
12. Straight. I recognize the area near the road and trail as an area I have either hung or picked up controls from. Hit the spur with rocks dead on but do not see the streamer. Do not waste any time looking either. Ted says later it was hung just over the edge. Must have been behind a tree.
13. Straight again. I have already decided to go from 13 to 18 and finish since I am so far back. Since I will have to pick up 15-17 anyway I will just start my pickup from 13 and go by 14 on the way.
14. After parking the car and jogging down to 13, I continue where I left off. Feeling a bit better after drinking the ERG in my car. Helps my speed but not my navigation. Keep misreading the reentrants and take forever. Think I have found it when I see a big set of streamers but after running down to them, realize they are to dirty to have been hung today. Figure out where they are and find the correct rentrant from there. Should have taken the trail around.
15. Do take the trail around for this one. Looks very different coming from the other direction than when I hung it.
16. Straight. I hung this so know exactly where it is.
17. Doing this leg in the opposite direction than when I hung them. Very careful since I have heard that I hung the control on on unmapped pit and the wet pit is actually a well. Sure enough, I find a pit just like the one I used but instead of a pair of similar pits one of them is more of a well. I continue on to see how close the other pits are. After 60 steps I can see the deadfall that obscures the pits where I hung the bag.
18. Went straight from 13 to 18. But added the time from 17 to 13 done later. Catch Heidi and Valerie on the way.
19. Stay with Heidi and Valerie. Straight past the building.
20. Up to the finish and along the power line cut. With Heidi's urging Valerie tries to beat me to the control. We get there together.
F. I immediately u turn and run for the finish. Valerie takes a more leisurely approach.
