Race Evaluation

US Champs: Blue - Day 1

1. Did not plan ahead
Did not read control code
Checked control code at pit
2. Read map too late
Hesitated at end of stone wall segment to east, up on ridge - hadn't read contours.
3. Did not follow plan
4. Went straight from road intersection.
5. Road
7. Lacked confidence
Took conservative route - SE to trail and attacked off small hilltop by trail.
8. Lacked confidence
Unsure south of gorge. Slow into control.
9. Took a chance
Bad map reading
Perfect to swamp, then pulled off by Red control west of ours.
10. Bad map reading
Navigation shaky - went slow and relocated from boulder to NE.
11. Glimpse of white shirt (Eric Bone) closing on #10 spurred me - took straight line route.
12. Did not check features en route
Bad map reading
Took off a little fast and got a little confused after crossing 1st stream. Relocated from ridge across linear swamp to north of correct hill mass. Slogged through swamp. Passed by Eric somewher in here without seeing him.
13. Lacked confidence
Stayed west of swamp. Terrain vague near control - approached slowly through unmapped light green until in reentrant uphill of control.
14. Greg Balter caught me just past road and beat me into control.
15. Just ahead of Greg into control.
16. Greg right behind me again.
17. Ran too fast
Read map too late
Disturbed by others
Decide to lose Greg and go too fast down hill, across stream, up through slash, across trail, down into swamp...where am I? Oh, hell! I'm 300m NW of control. No problem from there but damage is done.
20. Bad map reading
Lacked concentration
Poor map reading - dance in and along eastern edge of kneedeep swamp west of area bound by stone walls.
