Race Evaluation

DVOA Fair Hill Classic: Green X 1

PBricker

1. Since I often botch the first control, if there's a reasonable safe route, I take it. In this case, I went around along the field edge. Maybe 10-15 seconds faster to go straight (assuming I had spiked it going straight!).
2. +01:00Having taken the easy route to 1, this in effect became my first control, so I botched it. Got left, and went to a flag on a rootstock (brown); then drifted over into the right area, but with no plan and didn't find it right away.
3. Left of line on dry ground. Crossed one steam, hesitated, saw I needed to cross another, and found it pretty quickly. Not reading the map very well without maginification.
4. Between the out-of-bounds areas, to the trail junction, along the trail a bit, and contoured to it, seeing the root stock in front of it from a distance.
5. +02:00Short leg, so why bother to read the map? Thought I was right of the thicket on line, but I was left of it. When I saw a big rootstock along the river, I mistook it for the one N of the control; it was the one ENE. So I headed way too far east before coming back for it.
6. Stayed left of line, took the trail around the corner, and then spiked it.
7. Basically straight. A bit risky with no attack point, but there were good catching features if I missed it. I spiked it.
8. +01:30Decided to go straight through the woods rather than attack from the field to the north. I came in a bit south to the marsh, but didn't see the flag as I went by, and didn't see any dot knoll NW of the marsh, so I continued to the first real knoll E of the marsh, where there was a flag. Not mine (which was no surprise). I came back to the marsh, headed northwest and found it on the other side of a root stock. Where was the dot knoll?
9. May have drifted a bit right of line before I crossed the stream, but no problem with this one.
10. Picked a very bad (and painful) place to cross into the open field. I should have gone south to the trail. No problem after that. I checked the number of the control on the marsh, but no time lost since it was right in my path.
11. Delayed a bit by a group of horses crossing the stream at the trail where I had planned to cross. I crossed a bit further up. Went through the marsh (which was ankle deep) before the control instead of around it, but otherwise no problem.
12. Straight to it.
13. Didn't notice the hole in the fence, so went around.
F. Never had any fast-twitch muscles.
