Race Evaluation

: CSU Feb. Semi-permanent course

ParkSchool

1. Here it is, with all the gory details. Started quite satisfactorily with trail run.
2. +02:45Ran off map to W on trails. Then didn't see streamer when I was inside circle and became confused and uncertain. Went back to trail, then saw marsh and retreated back to circle again. This time I saw the streamer.
3. N of marsh then straight. One of the few good legs.
4. +00:30Staying in white and noting #9 as I ran by. Ran to large cliffs, but then did not read map carefully and checked out boulders to the N of circle
5. To bend in road and climbed early. Probably smarter to run more through parking lot.
6. Contoured around. Probably a little further N than I wanted to be.
7. +03:00Trails to N of water, then ran to spur with bare rock but did not see streamer. Thought I was too far W, so went E, but still nothing. Back W, but now clearly below cliffs. Back E, and this time I saw the streamer on the same spur where I had been earlier
8. On line hitting trail a little E of intended path.
9. +01:30Trail to first intersection and cut corner. Hit trail in green and started looking for elevation with cliffs. Compass said I was heading N, not E, but I could see an elevation, so chose to ignore compass. It was that type of day. Wrapped around hill and saw flag which seemed to be in reentrant, not on boulder, and strangely familiar. Ugh!. At least I could follow my own footprints from #3 to #9.
10. +00:30Inexplicably left control heading NE, not NW, so passed swampy area on the N, then along road.
11. Crossed road, then straight line from trail head. Crossing stream was harder than anticipated. Probably better to stay on trail a bit longer.
12. Stayed high on line, but then got hung up on largely impassable cliffs to the NE.
13. +04:30Ran below big cliff and then up to flattish area beyond flag. Then pointless ran in circles trying to make sense of the map (which I never did) instead of retreating and just reading carefully. This was a technical control, and I should have just accepted the need to stay in contact with the map.
14. Straight, although drifted a little left, but able to correct easily.
15. Mostly on line. Missed a touch to the E.
16. S of E to trail intersection, then roughly following broad spur.
17. +00:45Options seem to be to go N to the trail or straight on line, but I did neither. Attempting to go straight trusting the road to guide me in, I made another inexplicable bad departure and ran S of W to hit road far earlier than appropriate. At that point, I probably just should have run along the road, but I tried to run straight and wound up missing a bit to the E.
18. Aimed straight but wound up a bit to the N.
19. Picked up trails, then left as I saw elevation in front of me. Slow on climb, but at least I finally did what I intended to do.
20. NW to trail, then cut corner to road. I might have been able to go straighter, but had no confidence in running on compass bearing at this point.
21. +01:00Slightly S of line to large path with electrical lines, then down in heap after falling fairly hard on ice. Turned L on first trail, then tried to pick out correct elevation, but got confused and ran to the rise to the NE crossed by stone well. Another distressingly poor display.
22. E to trails, then along trail system.
F. E of temple.
