Race Evaluation

Hudson Highlander: Lowlander

JanetT

1. HH #8. We started at the 2nd HH aid station, near the parking lot. West up the hill and past the power line, then contour around the hill to the reentrant and boulder. Was just behind the Fluegels for the first several controls.
2. HH 9 Contour to the hill/boulder.
3. HH 10 S, hit trail but took off it to contour around hill.. We were a couple contours too high but Lori H. spotted it down lower. George Hawes and Bill Shannon overshot it.
4. HH 11 Contour to big trail and then through saddle and along hillside, climbing up to ridge at the right time.
5. HH 12 Started out a little west of the line, going by large flat area (mapped as seasonal marsh but it was just grass. Noticed ridge that control should be one top of and started climbing up to it. Found the rocky little hill just S of flag, then saw flag.
6. HH 13 East - easy. Pulling ahead of Fluegels, Lori, and George & Bill now.
7. HH 14 East, picking way across boulders to little hill. Did not stop to drink/eat, but hesitated so I could give volunteers my bib number. :-) (Thanks to the volunteers!)
8. HH 15 West around the hilltop.
9. HH 16 -- Starstruck :-) Worked my way left around 1st hilltop and right around 2nd then down reentrant between rocky ground and laurels to longish cliff ESE, pointed compass and saw the flag on a large boulder. No one there when I arrived, but... just after I punched I heard footsteps, turned, and Thierry Gueorgiou punched just behind me! A crowd (6-8?) arrived shortly afterward. By the time I was 50 m from the control, Tero was out of sight.
10. HH 17 East, too the south of bare hilltop with rock edges and the next two bare rock areas to mapped hill in reentrant, then compass from there. Nailed it.
11. HH 18 Contour along hill below rocky ground to formline spur and beyond to boulder cluster.
12. HH 19 Didn't like the looks of powerline vegetation so stayed above it until past powerline jct. Will H (eventual 2nd place) passed me here.
13. +02:00HH 20 Headed off to Tiorati circle. (Pit stop on the way-2:00 lost?) Tried to climb above mapped green (laurel) but didn't get high enough and spent a few unnecessary minutes fighting the laurel. No problem with the navitation, though.
14. +04:00HH 21 Took a mental break and dropped to Seven Lakes Drive to run around the hills, turning in at the AT (connector?) just S of the diamond-shaped N arrow on the map. Checked out the trail jct I'd see later on the 17-18 leg (HH 24-25). Missed jct of intermittent trail (because the trail didn't exist!) and overran and had to backtrack and bushwhack but had a reentrant to follow. George and Bill punching; Lori nearby.
15. HH 22 George, Bill, Lori and others heading a little east of line; I was west and climbed too high; had to drop 1.5 contours to the control (after they punched).
16. HH 23 Geo, Bill & crew out of sight but navigated fine.
17. HH 24 Skirted marshy area and crossed rocky reentrant to approach along the hillside/ridge (could see where it was started to drop off to the S).
18. HH 25 Cross country route this time (road route would have involved too much unnecessary climb). Down to trail (AT) which I followed S and SW around hill to next mapped jct (not visible in terrain). Saw Geo and crew right of the line; I followed the creek/reentrant heading in the right direction; crossed next trail, and skirted marsh until I could see the big chunk of rock the control (reentrant was behind). Emily K. (eventual HH female winner) went flying by in the first half of this leg.
19. HH 26 Left of line to avoid first bit of rocky ground, then attempted to go straight, contouring around the hill with camping areas.
F. Finish Jogged to finish, carefully crossing Tiorati Circle (light traffic at the time). Was surprised when Bill and George came in 7 min later (I thought they were still ahead of me). Fluegels were 8 min. behind them. Lori finished ahead -- must have left them in the dust after 16/23.
