Race Evaluation

GAOC: GA Navigator Cup - Day 1: Red

ebuckley

1. No brainer - road run the whole way. Took a look at the route to 2 while running.
2. Up the hill to miss the green, then back along the stream.
3. Straight.
4. Straight was faster, but the area was pretty subtle, so I went north to the ditch and followed that to the control.
5. Ran loose SSE to road (saw 12 to my left along the way). Up the steepest part of the hill to the trail. Trail wasn't much faster than the woods because it was so steep. Left the trail when it started to zig-zag and went straight up the spur, crossing the road just east of the fenced area. I had to walk a bit near the top. Went down the spur checking off reentrants on the left and hit the control cleanly.
6. +01:00Along stream then straight up. Hesitated when I came to some unmapped rocks. Got to the right spur, but didn't see the control because it was actually part way down into the reentrant. I figured the control must be higher because I could see all the way down the spur and the vegetation was thicker above. Went up about 50m before realizing the control was behind me.
7. Easy leg. Ran loose near bottom of ridge until I spotted the cliff.
8. Another easy leg. Followed the stream. Got hung up in some thick vegetation.
9. Straight up the big spur. My legs were really toast by now since I hadn't had to slow down to navigate. Walked most of the steep stuff. Picked up the trail at the top and took it until it bent north. Then followed the spur down to the big E-W reentrant. Went around top of reentrant, then west to the knolls.
10. Ran down to the stream, staying right of the green stuff. Picked up the trail for a bit and then cut across the flat area to the big trail. Left the trail about 100m before the reentrant and angled up to the control.
11. On the way down, I picked out the right reentrant on the other side of the trail. Started pushing harder since most of the climb was behind me.
12. Straight at it. I knew from the leg to 5 that the control was hung in a high-visibility area, so I didn't worry about missing it.
13. Trail run.
14. Trail run to the first junciton, then up the hill to the high trail.
F. Pretty beat by the finish. 2nd on Red, 1st M40+.
